1968 1800s Manual Trans Noise 1800 1968

Hi,
I'm new to Volvo's and this board...so 'hi' everyone. Anyway problem I have is with my fiancee's car's transmission. It's the 4 speed manual type with overdrive. When you select a gear (any gear) and take your foot off the clutch the trans makes a bad whining sound. The sound goes away when (a) step on the gas or (b) push the clutch pedal down. It seems worse if the car is moving downhill, and your foots off the gas.

Any ideas? Hope someone can help. I'm probably way off but could it be the hydraulic clutch needs bleeding?

Thanks
Rob

I would suspect that the bearings are going bad. I had a similar problem on my 74 164 4sp OD with the same type of noise you describe. The bearings make noise when the race starts to get rough spots. This can be caused by the fluid level getting low and providing insufficent lubrication to the top bearings. The bearings load is shifted from front race to the back race depending on whether accelerating or deaccelerating. The whine just got worse unitl I had the transmission rebuilt with new bearings. This wasn't cheap as I had it done at the dealer. I didn't feel comfortable going into the OD unit and taking it apart to replace bearings.

The OD is a lot easier than the tranny!
