seat heaters 200 1991

Ok what am I missing?
Can you tell the seat heaters are working? Is it obvious by touch or something?
Switches on e-brake work, lights on switches operate. Voltage is present at the connector under the seat when switches are activated. Does not seem like the heaters are working?? Do not get voltage drop when switched on. Does not appear to be an amp draw when on. Is it common for the thermostats to go or is it another problem. Seems peculiar to me that both are not working.
Anyone have an idea?

What Jorrell said...

On mine, I added seat heaters I pulled from a pick-and-pull during seat rebuilding-- new grids, fixed the springs, updated the foam and washed the covers. I ended up having to open both seats because of bad thermostats that tested OK on the bench (and in the freezer).

My solution was to take them out-- now the seat heaters are switched manually. They have worked fine ever since-- more than two years ago. If you want to keep the thermostats, solder on a little piece of wire on either side for strain relief. Kneeling on the seats is one of the best ways to mess up the seat heaters...

Good luck!

If I recall correctly, there is a thermostatic switch wedged into the seat from the bottom / springs of the seat. Our 89 had this switch fail 4 times in 30K miles. If it is stuck open, the heater grid gets no power/heat. If it is good, then probably one of the wire loops in the heater plates is broken.

My money is on the thermostatic switch.

Yes I am leaning towards the seat thermostat myself. Just seemed odd to me that both would go. if it is in fact common then i will direct my attention to them.

Does anyones know the resistance of the heater coil(s)?

Good comment about kneeling on the seat. If you have Kids.......enough said

Just pull the seats out and pull the back of the seat covers up. You'll find, most likely, that the wire leading into the little, nickle sized thermostatic switch, is broken. Resolder it together and you'll have a nice warm behind!

Good luck
