Instrument cluster 200 1993

1993 240 wagon
Need new instrument cluster
Does it have to be an exact replacement for year and/or model, or will other Volvo instrument clusters work?
Thanks.

Do you need a whole cluster, or just one of the gauges? I believe you can use any speedo gauge that matches (note the others commenting on matching numbers) from the later years. Not sure when Volvo switched over to the electronic speedo, but I have a 92 and I'm sure that would work as long as the numbers match. The number is right on the front of the gauge r9080 or r40186 or something along those lines.

If you need a whole cluster you probably are better off with a same year cluster, just to keep yourself sane-ish.

As for the tach wire, I say if you're not using it, now is the time to put a tach in and use that wire!

    Best,

    You need a '93 cluster because .... 200 1993

You must have a '93 cluster (maybe a '92, but that's the limit), if for no other reason than that you have ABS brakes -- with the requisite warning lights on your instrument panel, and only '93 and '92 cars have ABS.

I've also found some strange wiring changes on my two '93s that aren't in anything earlier -- e.g., the turn signal/hazard flasher unit is unique to the '93 cars, and maybe other changes apply to the instrument panel as well.

The numbers on the face should match. I believe theres one for the wagon and one for the sedan.

Please learn from my mistake watch out for the tachometer wire. If your car doesnt have a tach it still may be wired for one. Theres also a perfectly wrong spot for it to go on the cluster which can do extensive damage. Its a red-white wire.

    Whats wrong with the cluster?

You should match the number on the speedometer. What is the matter with yours? Dan

      Thanks for your reply.

Bought car off ebay - only 3 warning lights on right; no ABS brakes so that's not an issue - just want other warning lights to be safe!

The odometer stops occasionally, but since I'm prob the final owner it's not a huge deal - I'll go by time periods rather than mileage for misc service.

        odometer + cluster indicator lights 200 1993

No need to ditch your cluster for those reasons.

Those bulbs burn out eventually. Replacement is not tooo difficult. You have to remove the cluster from dash, same as if you were to replace cluster. Bulbs are inserted into rear of cluster, very easy to get at.

I'm pretty sure the owners manual gives the exact bulb part #. Or you can get from a junker or bring dead bulb to a good parts store.

You also can repair the odometer if you want - there's a small plastic gear that likes to break. If you disconnect the oil-change-reminder-mileage-tracking doodad there's less strain on the gear and it will last a lot longer. fcpgroton.com sells the gear, there's more information somewhere via this site on exactly how to. I never had to do it so I don't have the specifics myself.

        Be forwarned:
When removing the cluster, find the red + white sriped wire behind cluster. Unless you have a tach, it will be hanging loose back there somewhere. Tie it up and mark "FOR TACH ONLY" so that nobody ever hooks it up incorrectly when reinstalling cluster. That wire will fry anything else you hook it up to. If you do have a tach, pay attention exactly where that wire came from when you pull it off the back of the cluster.

          speedometer types 200 1993

OK, a few guys hit this point briefly.

There are numbers on front of speedo, at the bottom. Like K#####. For non-ABS cars it's K9800 for wagons and K100## for sedans, if I recall correctly. ABS cars have a higher number.

From '86 forward, there was one # for wagons and one for sedans.
When ABS brakes were offered there was another pair of numbers possible, for ABS wagons and ABS sedans.

Whatever you do, that number has to match what's on the car originally. If not, the speedometer + odometer (when working) will be inaccurate.
