96 volvo 960 reving high while at a idle 900

I have a 96 volvo 960 just recently it has started to rev up real high while it is sitting in park. I have not driven the car since then. But would like to know if any body has had this problem?

Do you mean to say that the idle speed is just high period or is it going up and down without the user applying the throttle?

If it is just a high idle speed, then:

If you are familiar with the throttle body and the accelerator linkage to it, a first step would seem to be to disconnect the little ball-joint link to the throttle valve on the throttle body. If the idle speed goes down when you pop the ball joint off the throttle valve connection, the rod length is not set right and needs to be adjusted, i.e it's too short and it's pulling the throttle valve open even when the accelerator pedal is all the way up. Adjustment is fairly easy and straightforward.

If the idle speed is moving around in some weird fashion, then there is probably an error code stored that would give you a better clue.

The code in the system is p0115 temp sensor. The car will idle about 900 rpms then jump to 3000 then to 4000

That sensor will make the car idle at a higher speed-if you let it get back to the right idle and then give it just a little gass it revs up quick and takes awhile to get back down. Not sure where yours is though-the one on my 960 is under the thermostat housing and you need to replace the stat when replacing the sensor. I have been thru two of these in 250k miles.
        Hope that helps
