Caliper bleeder screw covers - where to find or how to fabricate? 200 1990

1990 244 DL

I've attempted to find bleeder screw covers for my three new calipers, but have had no luck. The ones that are available in packages in the box stores are too big. Any suggestions on where to find them or how to construct suitable ones? I had to replace one caliper because the bleeder screws were seriously corroded and broke off, and the threads got stripped when trying to remove it.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Vacuum hose, cut to length, fill end with black rubber sealant, let set, place over bleeder.

Tell us about your 3 new calipers.

There are known problems with some rebuilt front (non-ABS) calipers. A quick visual will spot the bad ones.

Also a tip on replacing calipers—or opening lines for any reason (how to keep fliud from draining).

As for bleeder covers, NAPA or Autozone etc. must have them.

3 new calipers 200 1990

Back when this project was young (October/November), and before I'd read much on the board, I replaced the two back ATE calipers via NAPA (part numbers 142-6426 and 27). The front calipers were good to go until the bleed process, when each caliper had at least one rusty bleed screw break. In the process of trying to remove the remainder on the front passenger side, the threads in the hole stripped off as well, making it unusable. Stole a 'good' bleed screw for the driver's side, and replaced the caliper with NAPA part number 142-6424. I don't know the manufacturers, and it was quite a while ago.

If you want further info, I need to know more specifically what you are looking for.

The screw size is smaller on these, and the caps at Autozone/Advance are too big and slop around. NAPA doesn't carry them at all.

I got mine from eEuroparts also. As to caliper bleeder screw snap off - try this. Use PBBlaster or similar spray (not just WD40) several times on seperate days to penetrate and loosen the bleeder. Then use a deep 6 point socket of decent quality, such as craftsman, and gently try to loosen it, trying NOT to put any angle on the attempt (i.e. no sideways pull). If no joy try the whole procedure again the next day. After getting it loose, remove it briefly and put a very small amount of anti-seize paste on the threads. Don't use much or you will block the hole. Then thread it back on, realizing that the modest size of the bleed screw requires a snug up effect without a great deal of torque. It should be screwed down but not really forced heavily. It needs to stay on but does NOT hold anything else on except itself. Not everyone will agree with the anti-seize paste (usually silver, by Loctite, but not Loctite, which is an opposite product).
