LSD or not ? 700

I can't seem to get a straight answer about this diff. So I took some pics ( it's out of the car w/ the cover removed, making the squint work a little less ). So if a diff knowledgable someone could take a look at the pics and give me a YES or NO answer that would be more than kind.

Just take it out to a big parking lot, get going about 20 mph, cut hard left and floor it. If the inside rear wheel spins, you probably don't have a LSD.

I have a Detroit TrueTrac in my 1987 745T. It does an excellent job, and a much better job than the Volvo LSD that was in it previously. You'll spend about $500 to install one. You'll have to get the proper Detroit TrueTrac unit for your ratio carrier, which should be a 3.73:1 ratio. All US delivery turbo 700 series with automatic came with that ratio. In addition to the TrueTrac unit, you'll have to buy the tone ring, and sensor spacer, which Volvo used on their LSD for the 700 series. The carrier will have to be turned down just a little to accept the LSD tone ring. The LSD tone ring is slightly greater in diameter than the tone ring in non-LSD rear ends.

I have the broken Volvo LSD, and I can supply pictures if you need.

The 1041 locker does a fine job, but I have been completely unsuccessful at getting one to drive the non-ABS speedometer. I even tried the ABS speedometer and wiring harness in the car and still couldn't get it working right.

The Volvo LSD was a dealer installed option here in the US. The factory didn't fit them.

I'd stay away from that shit dude, it's too potent, I took some in the 70's and I still see traces once in a while.

perfect thanks. Also, Please, ...if you could be so kind as to point me in the direction of parts purchasing and installation of LSD gears for a 1031. and/or a complete 1041 for purchasing....I'm not big on the lockers - I guess that'll be a last resort - does anyone make a stronger uglier LSD...for a Volvo 700 Pre IRC. I have half a dozen complete ford 9.0 rears all outta the ranger series. I could do all the searching myself but it seems you end up in most threads concerning rear-ends anyways. thought maybe you'd have some quicklinks..hint hint..

is a type 1041 Eaton locker, stock on 940 turbos.


The diff shown in my pics is a 1031 w/ 3.91 gears, and is clearly not a 1041 nor is it outfitted w/ a Eaton Locker. This is an exact example of why I'm so unsure as to if the 1031 I have has LSD or not. This is not a lashback reply, kinda is written like one but totally written in a hurry...I also see why you got into the locker part of things. Was it because of my keyword locker...? oops my bad if so.
