Help my sis get her brick to start, please.

I have been reading the FAQ's - have not found the answer yet - and she needs it to start asap.
She said that it would not crank at all earlier, was turning over slowly. She then tried it again and it cranked.
She got it home, and was checking to see if it would crank again, and she says the 'ding, ding' is sounding - but when she turns the key - it does nothing.
Her and her husband are a little ways off from me, and I would like to help them if I can. It is a 91 740 B230 NA.
I am thinking it has to be the battery or a ground. Please give me some ideas for them if you can.
Thanks
Andrew in AL

It just sounds like a weak battery or dirty terminals. Do they they know how old the battery is?

Do they have another car to jump start it off of, in order to confirm a bad battery?

Help my sis get her brick to start, please.

The battery was replaced about 3 months back.

That was the first thing I told him to do, was to make sure the terminals and all connections & ground straps were clean and tight.

As I told RSTARKIE ...he jumped the starter at the starter and it just whirred. The question is ...does this actually mean that the the starter / solenoid is bad?

      Thanks for the reply.

So it 'Whirred ' when he Hot wired the Starter (like the starter was spinning but not throwing the Gear forward to the Flywheel)?

That sounds like a different issue then the Slow crank mentioned.

From your first Post, I too, thought bad Battery connection, now I'm a bit thrown by the Starter spinning but not engaging.
With the battery replaced just three months ago, I would check the Battery connections. If he had the work done, it's possible the guy with the
Water-Pump-Pliers working on the car didn't tighten them very well.

Just remember it takes A LOT of Current to spin up a Starter. Running the lights would tell you if your battery is in very bad shape. But a bad connection might run the lights fine but not have enough connection to carry the current needed to spin up a Starter fast and hard.

He said he checked the lights, and they were strong. When he said it whirred, my first thought was the solenoid was not engaging.
He does not know Volvo's much at all, and the shorting of the starter may not be the best way to check the starter at all.
I will one more time try to get him to tighten it all down to make sure and try again.
          Thanks for the reply.

I am confused as to what it is or is not doing. You say it "would not crank at all earlier, turning over slowly". What do you mean by "not crank"? Do you mean it would not run or it would not turn over by means of the starter?

When I hear that an engine will not crank I assume it will not turn over by means of the starter.

If it will only crank slowly and then not crank at all I would first suspect a weak battery. Usually a weak battery that is unable to cause the engine to crank over would also display weak headlight illumination. Ask her what the headlights look like when she turns them on.

      Thanks for the reply.

I got back with the hubby and he affirmed that the lights and all were strong - but it would not turn over at all.

Then he said he jumped the contacts at the Starter and it just whirred, so he is going to replace the starter. Does this always indicate a bad starter / solenoid? I really don't think he is doing enough to know.

I did find in my Haynes manual that most of the problems associated with this relate to grounds and contacts, so I am hoping that he is not replacing the starter too quickly - when it could be a connection.
