Rough Idle While Cold 700 1990

While the car is cold, my 740 idles rough -- whole car rattles and shakes. If I put the auto trans into Park, the idle drops down to nearly 500 RPM and seems to get rougher and rougher until the Check Engine light comes on and the engine seems like it's getting closer and closer to stalling.

I cleaned the throttle bodies, but it did not solve the problem. As soon as the car gets warm (5 minutes into my morning commute), the problem disappears.

What could be causing this?

Thanks,
JR

Do you leave the AC or the defroster on when you shut the car off?( in other words, are they on when you fire the thing up cold ?)

Have you checked for error codes?

No, the AC hasn't worked for years (I place the control into position to activate the system) and I don't use the defroster in San Diego.

Checked the codes a while back -- they were all clear, and I believe the car was exhibiting this behavior at the time, but I will check them again.

      THanks.

Check the engine temp sensor plug under the intake manifold. Remove and clean the idle air control valve. It may be gummed up and sticking when cold. The IAC valve mechanism should be pretty loose and flop around when the valve is shaken. Spray the heck out of it w/ carb or brake cleaner.
