Sport? 444-544

How do you tell if your 544 is a "Sport" model. The badging was missing off my trunk when I bought it.

Sport? 444-544

According to the 544 B16 specifications guide and forward page from the 544 part catalog, if I am reading this correctly, the only "sport" models are those with part numbers 54406 and 54407 (Swedish market) or 54408 and 54409 (US Market) with specs as follows:

P54406 - B16B, M4 gearbox
P54407 - B16B, H6 gearbox
P54408 or P544-11234B - B16B, M4 or M40 gearbox
P54409 or P544-11232B - B16B, M30 gearbox

This only applies to the 544A and 544B. I also believe there were "sport" models for the 544C (first with the B18 engine) through the 544G models but couldn't find many specs for these except model numbers:

PV544C = 11234C - B18D, M40 gearbox
PV544D = 11234D - B18D, M40 gearbox
PV544E = 11234E - B18D, M40 gearbox
PV544F = 11234F - B18D
PV544G = 11234G - B18D

The only "sports" are those with the B16B engine (544A + 544B), and B18D type-1 90 HP (544C, D, E & F) as well as B18B type-2 95 HP (544G). (Or those others with real sporty drivers.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I had to do some Swedish to English translation. :)
I anxiously await Cam's corrections and accurate information. :)

Tony, you are absolutely correct. My findings may seem complicated, but should put the Sport emblem question to bed for ever. Contrary to some beliefs, there was an early PV544 non-Sport model sold in North America, possibly in the Canadian market.

The "Sport" scripted trunk emblem was used on the B16B equipped PV544 A and B models. There were two versions; part number 659083 until chassis #302254 and the Sport (part #663509) emblem afterwards. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the B16 PV544 had a swallow, 544 or Sport emblem (#663509) on the front hood lifter. All PV544 B18D versions were badged with the Sport emblem(#663509) or the square Sport badge (#671189) after chassis #419300 on the trunk. There even was a smaller Sport emblem on the radio delete plate of the B16B PV544 A and B (part#659747)! So, it is conceivable that an A or B model PV544 could have 3 separate Sport emblems - hood, no radio plate and trunk!

The following is for Tony's records, but shows some interesting variations for the late 444 and early 544 models.

I will also say there never was a 444 Sport badged model, even though the early American PV444 model came with the B14A 70 h.p. motor with dual SU HS2 carburetors. This engine was destined for the P1900 and was never offered in Sweden in their PV444. The last PV444 L-LS model (Jan. 1957 - August 1958) was upgraded with the B16A (66 hp SAE) and the B16B (85 hp SAE) both available in North America. My resources indicate:

PV444 L 44403 Std (10932 produced), 44404 Spec (34837), 44408 Spec USA (17782) and 44409 Std USA (536)

The "Spec" or Special had stainless steel fender trim and a more deluxe interior, but not necessarily the B16B motor.

The last digit indicates 3 - B16A, H6 (3-speed single Zenith-Stromberg)
4 - B16A H6 or B16B M4 (4 speed as in my Amazon-S)
8 - B16B H6 (3 speed) or more common M4
9 - B16D H6 (only 72 hp SAE and 3 speed)*
* never seen one of these but maybe this was the 1958 444 model sold in Canada?

To make things more complex, the A PV544 models were:

1 Standard USA B16A, M30 (3 speed synchro)
2 Special USA B16A, M4
3 Standard B16A, H6
4 Special II B16A, M4
5 Special I B16A, H6
6 Sport B16B, M4
7 Sport B16B, H6
8 Sport USA B16B, M4
9 Sport USA B16B, H6

so, you can see the first PV544 came in many combinations, even here in North America. So, to conclude, the Sport was a specific model, sold in all markets and not exclusive to USA. Also, there was a non-Sport model sold in NA.

The B PV544 changed the VIN number but did exist with either a B16A or B and surprisingly in Europe with a B18A or B18B and the P1800 B18B - don't think these made it over to the USA. Another surprise to me was the variety of transmissions:

1 and 2 - M30 (3 speed with synchro)
3 - M31 (3 speed with O/D - I saw one in Holland on the shelf!)
4 - M40
5 - M41 (4 speed with O/D - in a PV544?)
6 - BW35 automatic
8 - M40 overseas (i.e. USA/Canada)

Many of these combination may be very rare or possibly never produced, IMHO!

PS: My references are the PV-klubben Faktabok (factbook written in Swedish) and the V44 parts catalog CD-ROM (some also in Swedish). That's why it took me so long to respond! Have a great weekend.

Count the carbs.

Pretty much every single PV ever (oficially) imported to the US was a 'Sport' model. Basically means (AFAIK) a 4 speed manual and two carbs on the motor. Lower end models in other markets sometimes had 3 speed transmission, single (Zenith) carbs.

Of course Volvo still ensured that the $$$P1800$$$ was the fastest car they sold by neutering the PV's B18 with a tractor cam.

John!
I hate to argue with you but I'm pretty sure that the old B16 PVs were NOT
marked "Sport". I think the "Sport" came with the newfangled B18 engines.
(My first 3 Volvos, a '60 544, a '59 544 and a '58 444, were all B16 powered
and none had the "Sport" designations and all had dual carbs.)

I was assuming the B16A motor had one carb, and maybe it didn't? In any case I'll still maintain the the Sport model was used before the B18 motor, indicating a car with both the 4 speed manual and a B16B motor, as opposed to the B16A motor.
...
I wouldn't wager any real money on it though! ;)

My 544s and 444 all had 4 speed and dual carbs but no evidence of the "Sport"
designation. I think I'll stick to my opinion, as first told to me by a friend
in California, that the Sport model was the B18 dual carb, 4 speed version.
BTW I had only seen ONE B18 544 when I was driving PVs, 1967-70, and I think
that the owner put in the B18 himself.

Here's the Svedish Wikipedia entry on the 544 that seems to support the existance of a B16 engined 'Sport' model?

http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_PV_544

Of course, take that with a grain of salt, there's probably as much bogus info on the web as there is accurate. They mention the B16A as having one carb, 60 hp, and the B16B Sport model as having 2 carbs, 85 hp. Of course, maybe it wasn't badged on the trunk as a 'Sport' until the B18 came along?

Pretty sure I remember seeing (many years ago, somewhere in northern VA) a 60 or 61 544 Sport with a B16B. Of course, someone could have swapped the trunk lid, as it was far from new at the time.....

That was always my understanding, the PV544 A and B came with B16 engines, the cooking model had a B16 with a single Zenith whereas the Sport had twin SU HS 4 As far as I know no single carb models were sold in the US. No Sports were sold in Sweden because US import duty was based on the domestic price, hence only low spec models were sold in Sweden to keep the duty payable down

A 544 titled 1962 with 3288XX had the B16 with Sport badges takes up much space in my garage, and my mind. I think I've seen the cut off for B16 at 329000. I'm on the last block sanding. All the chrome is plated, new rubber seals, newly stitched interior, B18 installed. This might be the season it sees some miles. Way to much work, but they are the car, no? I'm guessing it was a hold over with the 1962 designation.
