Idle woes are gone, Gold Star for Art! 200 1986

Tip of the Hat to Art,

Yesterday posted an email over idle woes in Inga my 86 245DL. She would just up and die sitting at a light and was running really rough after my drive to work. Posted in my email that when my fuel pump switch was installed instead of the relay that the pumps made a strange sound. Art posted back that it sounded like the pick up pump in the tank. Went down to the local Euro Parts house and picked up a pump and a new sock. Took about 2 hours to changed the pump 30 min of that getting the rear cleaned out and the deck out and back in. Inga fired right up and the suddenly died, my heart dropped. But she fired right back up and after a minor idle adjustment purred like my piston slapping kitten shoud. Took her out for a good drive sat in the drive in gear while resetting the radio stations. She did not die and her idle was smooth. Igna returns to the Beltway in the morning for the daily trek to work. The wife is happy that she gets her car back.

So Art Gold Star for being dead on, in spite of my pretty bad desciption of the issue.

This weekend, Engine Harness!

Inga deserved a new pump 200 1986

Hi Paul,

I'm confused. Was it my reply in this thread http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1174798 that led you to replace the tank pump? Or is this a different Art? Just wondering, because I'm so rarely sure of any diagnosis by wire, so to speak, that I would recommend buying a part. Certainly glad it turned out for you and if I'm the one you are awarding a gold star to, it is my first since grade school. I'd give it to you for keeping Inga in such beautiful condition as your profile picture shows. These wagons are truly the best work Volvo has ever done.

Good to hear inga is back at it, this reafirms my idea that the pick-up pump has gone out or is on its way out in my old girl. How much experience do you have with cars (Just asking for comparison to myself)? I was thinking about diving into this one myself but it sounds kinda difficult.....Shes a wagon so it may not be to bad, I just can't afford a professional so doing it myself is my real only option.

This is easy. You need to pick up the tool for the tank nut at the auto store. Auto Zone and other will "loan" the tool. Get the sock and the pump, they come seperate. Actually the sedan is going to be faster there is a plate in the trunk most likely with just two screws. You have to take the floor out of the wagon. You disconnect the two fuel lines, remove the connectors, and then turn the nut CCW about 1/8 of a turn.

Then you gently work the pump up and out. Use a small wrench to remove the two nuts that hold the little connector on. Remove three screws, one from the little rubber hose, one from the gnd connection, and one holding the pump onto the frame in a platic holder. Insert the pump on the hose and tighen the clamp. Connect the clamp to hold it to the frame. Connect the little ground wire. Install the two prong connector and tighten the nuts. Install the new sock and you are ready to install as you removed.

I am at best a 3 or maybe 4 on the scale to 10 on things like this. Very good at the electric side of things, but that is what that degree was given for.

So this is one of those take your time, watch what you are doing, not hard to do at all.

PT

Sounds like I can handle it, I rate myself a bit lower than you(probably in the 2 to 3 range) but I can do things if I pay really close attention to what Im doing and nothing goes wrong. Thanks for the info.
