1997 965. Problem with radio code, long trip coming up soon, 900 1997

After a new battery installation (Wal-Mart under $60 incl. installation and tax) we attempted to put in the anti-theft code.

Well, the number I remembered was incorrect. After three attempts, the radio locked up and all the display would show was "Off".

Got home, checked the Owner's Manual. Very clear about "after three failed attempts the radio will lock up for two hours".

So we waited the two hours. Some time in driving, some time in being parked. Tried again, same thing. "Off"

Tried this morning, still "Off".

What am I doing wrong? Should the two hours be while the ignition is on?

The first time I ever did this was after a dead battery incident. The correct code worked quite well.

What to try next? Wife taking car on a 250-mile business trip Monday early.

Any help appreciated. Thank you,

Bob

1997 965. Problem with radio code, long trip coming up soon, 900 1997

I am having problems with a radio I am putting into my 960 - its a aftermarket Pioneer radio/cd player and I cannot get any sound. I do get the radio to lite up and show radio stations and even the CD playing but no sound from the speakers. Any ideas. Could this be a internal code thing even though its not the original volvo radio? thanks

    Bob,

As I recall with my daughter's 960 we had to have the power running to the radio for two hours in order to reset the code. I think it stops counting when the key if off. We had the wrong code for a PNP replacement radio. I called the local dealer's part's department with the VIN from the donor car and they gave me the correct code. Seems strange but I think we had to leave the key on ACC position for a couple of hours before the radio unlocked and we could enter the correct code.

      Hey T-Bone -

      Excellent answer.

About the time you were typing in your answer, I was getting worried about wife.sig coping with a front-seat CD player on her 5-hour drive so I called the dealer.

Spoke to Service, and the guy gave me the exact same answer. Leave key in Position I for two hours. Have all other electric things off, especially the a/c fan, to reduce power draw. After that, the "Off" word should change to "Code".

Wonder why that little gem is not in the Owner's Manual?

      Thanks again.

I have had cars in the past that have taken up to 24 hours with the radio left on for it to clear but usually they will do it within the two hour time frame. Just leave the ignition in the acc possition with the radio on and it will eventually reset and display "code", hopefully before the battery goes dead.

      Mark

After trying to enter the code did you press the auto button? I have to do that each time on mine.
