Steering boxes 140-160

Hi,

I have a 1973 145 that has had its steering box rebuilt a while ago. It still has some play, and apparently here (in Israel) it's difficult to find professional people that can properly rebuild it. So I'm looking for a replacement. My mechanic is also looking for a few steering boxes, so I'll appreciate a source for new or rebuilt ones.

Best
Sharon

Hello Sharon,

I have determined(at your request) that I have 3 NOS (New Old Stock) steering boxes in stock and they all are correct for you 1973 145.

Can you please let me know if you or your mechanic are interested?

Please let me know one way or the other.

Thank you,

Hi all, this is just an off topic tip rearding steering boxes:

The oil seal at the bottom of the steering box can go bad and leave a mysterious sticky oil stain at your garage floor. This was the case of my -68 164, and the solution was to fill the box up with grease. A wellknown fix amongst the Landroverheads. No more leaks, and the box works smoothly. (it takes a week or two for the old oil to seep past the broken seal, but after that - bob's your uncle)

1968 164, production number 107, first registered november 5th 1968.

Hi Sharon,

Just something you might know already, the 140 box is a worm and roller type. What that means is the steering wheel will have play in it at any position except straight ahead.

Does the sector shaft have any play besides radial?

I'm in the same situation - got mine rebuilt about 2 years ago and the play in it has gotten progressively worse.

Supposedly if the worm in the box is bent, there is nothing you can do about it. I would love to put in power steering but they are very rare for RHD.

Try www.scandcar.nl in the netherlands.

You might want to consider looking for a P/S unit from a 164. Much easier to find that one from a 144. I fitted a 164 unit into my 144, with minor modifications, and it has worked well so far. I took the opportunity to upgrade to 195/65/15 on Virgos.

Of course, if you could get one out of a 144, it will bolt right in to your 144.

Great, thanks for the info. I'll definitely look into it. Was going to start looking into putting a rack and pinion setup in but I can't imagine it would be easy.

Cheers

No...you would NOT want to do a rack conversion. A 122 here did it with a power rack from a 240, heavily modified and cost a bomb. The rack was cheap. Of course it now has power steering, but the turning radius increased tremendously, and it needs a lot of road to do a U-turn. Backing it out of the parking lot IS a hassle even with power steering.

My 164 power steering "retrofit" into my 144 cost a fraction of the cost for the rack mods, looks original, very minor fabrication for the brackets and rods, and best of all, retains the original turning radius. Nothing was touched from the pitman arm downwards. One thing that never fails to amuse me is my 144's ability to make a tight U-turn and the end of the street in front of my house at one go, and then watch an Accord trying to do that in two tries!

Go look for a 164. Are they easy to come by where you are at? WHen you are ready, let me know if you need any tips, I'll be more than happy to help.

Sounds like someone used a poorly suited rack for the application, to me...(nmi) 140-160

Do not think USA 140's ever came with power steering, correct?

Volvo did offer power steering as an add-on option for the 140s and I've seen a few 140s with power steering here in the US.

No, but I'm considering doing the upgrade if I can find a good box.

you will also need the pump, hoses, mounting brackets, and steering shafts, if possible, to minimise fabrication.

Hello Sharon,

I have to check my stock, but I think I have a couple of the manual steering boxes for left hand drive Volvo 140 cars that are NOS (New Old Stock).

This is from the Genuine Classic Parts web site price list. I don't know it for a fact but I would guess that one box is for LHD and the other for RHD.
