Yes, I have perused the Crutchfield catalogue, but I'm curious to know of others' recommendations.

I would like to install component (separates) but would like to know where others have installed the tweeter.

Also, can the front baffles be removed and used for speakers? what size?

Thanks

Tweeters should be placed carefully for proper stereo imaging, the front windshield pillars are an ideal place, if you can use a ribbon tweeter like these Infinitys, very narrow mounting depth. Surface mount tweeters are also available, if you don't want to chop your pillars.

What do you mean by 'front baffles'? If you are referring to the kick panels under the dash, that is a rotten place to put speakers; pointing them at your feet will result in spectacularly bad sound.

    Bad sound = Not Good : )

no, front *door* as I said in the original post. There is an empty hole just roughed out with a baffle or grille but nothing behind. I have a 745 so the speakers are in the dash and rear door, but I do not see why I could not place a nice bass/mid in the front door and the tweets in the dash. Not totally ideal as you say, but tweets to reflect off of that glass is better than down low in the door. What say ye?

Also, can you post more photos of that brick stereo install? It's noice.

The front doors will take 5.25" speakers (as will the rear doors). I would place tweeters in the rear deck for the best sound separation, and be very careful of how you set them up. Just throwing a pair of speakers into a configuration can ruin an otherwise good sound system.
I would definitely recommend you DO NOT place your tweeters in front of you. It will most likely give you a raw, possibly painful sound.

On head choice, My picks would be Bose, Boston, or Blaupunkt, but the most baseline I would choose would be Alpine, Pioneer, or Panasonic. Rockford Fosgate could be nice, but I've never heard a complete system setup with only RF equipment.

Also, a subwoofer should be the last thing you purchase. Last as in after you get new speakers all around, then a receiver and amp for the speakers, then perhaps tweeters, and last and least importantly, a subwoofer.
Since you have the space in the wagon, you might consider putting in full size component speakers in the rear. There's room, and you could bolt them to the floor, where they could sit without them looking trashy (rather than behind the headrests. The rear deck would give for nice sound penetration of the woofers, good high/tweet reflection off the glass, but you should probably keep the mids in the read doors.

I would like to see someone put some 6x9"s 3-ways in the kick panels. It would probably rattle like crazy though.

Ultimately, the stereo system is for you, so don't be hasty in deciding. Listen to as many setups as possible, and at low volumes as well as high. You're not always going to drive around with the windows down blaring music, and some setups just don't sound good at low volume.

I helped my friend set up an infiniti sound system. It sounds nice, but the very thin kevlar speakers don't play enough bass to sound nice. It has a separate amp for the 2 pair of speakers. A small (8" I think) sub did wonders for it.

A decent CD/MP3/WMA player is all you need. Nothing fancy. External inputs are pretty handy nowadays since MP3 players and iPods are getting more popular. I got a base model Panasonic unit for the 240 which I like quite a bit. No bling, simple intuitive interface. For the 740 we got a Sony unit which I absolutely dispise. Sounds fine, but the interface is annoying... and it beeps (loud and annoyingly) when you turn off the ignition and leave the face plate in (which basically is all the time for us). Whenever I do anything to the car which involves disconnecting the battery, the radio defaults to the store display... then you need to track down the remote control. Sheesh.

No matter what, go through Crutchfield and get the Metra kit and wiring adapter. At least on our 740 there wasn't an inch of extra wiring in the harness connector, which would have made crimping a PITA in that little cubby had we not got the Crutchfield kit.

Thanks, I plan on using an aftermarket head unit that I have. But, did you replace the speakers? The stock speakers don't sound so great, IMO. Plus, there is that nice round hole with nothing inside on the front door... nice place for component speakers.

It depends on what year your car is. I have no complaints about the sound from the stock Electrolux speakers in my 88 745. The ones in an 89 I used to own were fine when I first got it, but they gradually deteriorated over the years and I had to replace them, so I suspect the amount of use (and the volume they are played at) has something to do with it.

Every 740 I've ever seen has speakers in the front doors, wagons have them in the rear doors, and sedans in the back shelf. Never seen dash mounted speakers--as far as I can tell, there is nowhere to put them, or do you have a 91-92 with the new style dash, and if so does it have speaker holes? If it does, that's probably where to put the tweeters, and use the front doors for the main bass/midranges.

I agree wirh Ryan R's negative comments about Sony. At present I have a 10 year old Blaupunkt in mine, which I like the look of, the ease of use, and the sound quality, but it is starting to show its age, mainly by skipping, sometimes on CDs with no visible flaws whatsoever. I had a Pioneer in my 89---great sound but annoying control layout, at least it didn't have that irritating beep.

yes, it is a 91 745 with speakers in the dash and rear doors but none in the front doors, which seems like a missed opportunity. Or, one I will take advantage of with some separates.

Well since you've already decided to get component speakers (which I highly recommend), and you have locations for dash speakers, by all means use them. The dash location is practically ideal for a tweeter. Mount 5 1/4" woofers in the front doors, and mount the tweeters in the dash.

Also consider a power amp, you will be amazed at the difference it makes. Your head unit probably has some BS rating of about 40 or 50 watts per channel -- it's a bunch of bunk! With the head unit's intenal amp, there's no dynamic range, frequency response is aweful, and the distortion is a joke.

Install a power amp with the same rating as your head unit, and you'll be floored by how much better the external amp makes the system sound.

Also check out Pioneer for CD decks. They have a lot of features for the price and are easy to use. They also have some of the best tuners in the business.

            Just my 2 cents.
