Be sure to check the vent, mine was plugged (spiders?) Ordered new seals, repacked the bearing in place, but it never leaked again!!!??? Still have the new seals. Also I switched to synthetic gear lube about the same time, possibly had some effect on restoring the seals?

BTW the bearing is packed with grease, the inner seal separates the bearing from the gear lube.

I believe its the pinion seal that you want to replace. It keeps the differential oil from leaking out.
Go here:

The axle bearing: In my opinion "if it aint broke, dont fix it". And if it does need to be replaced, make sure its absolutely done right. The part is pressed on. If not done right, it could come off enroute.

Another option is to get an axle from the wrecker with the bearing in place.

Just my opinion.

good luck

L.

rigth rear axle seal leaking 700 1990

Hi:

I had this problem on my '91 744 last fall. I got lucky and stopped the leak by doing the following to replace my inner axle seal:

Drain rear axle (I crawled under to do this - and made sure the fill plug would come off first!)
Jack up right rear wheel. Remove caliper and secure it out of the way.
Remove rotor (make sure the car is well blocked and the parking brake is released or the rotor won't move.) Remove parking brake shoes taking note of how they are arranged. Remove four bolts from bearing retainer. The axle should now pull out with a good yank. The bearing is pressed on the axle and will remain there. Try to keep everything as clean as possible as you don't want dirt getting into the axle. The inner seal is pressed into the axle housing. I used a curved nail puller to pop it out.
I pressed the new inner seal in by using a large socket of the same diameter and tapping it in with a hammer. The side with the spring goes in and the flat side faces out. If you want to change the outer seal the bearing will have to be pressed off the axle shaft (or cut off with a grinder) and a new outer seal and bearing pressed on. If you want to change the outer seal you might as well change the bearing at the same time!

Clean the gear oil off of everything that it isn't supposed to be on. Reverse the procedure to reinstall and refill the axle with gear oil (I used Mobil 1 gear oil.) To date, the leak has not returned on mine and I did not replace the outer seal or bearing. If it does, then the outer seal and bearing will have to be replaced.

It wasn't a bad job - probably took me an hour or so.

Good luck!
