towing 900

I'm considering towing my '67 Duett to Carlisle this year (~250 miles). I plan to put the usual (Hidden Hitch) Class II, I think, trailer hitch onto my '96 960 and then rent a car trailer. I think the Duett probably weighs ~2000lbs. Have no idea what the trailer would weigh. I've towed many a boat but the only time I towed a car was behind a much heavier truck.

Any experience, comments, suggestions?

Thank you.

Kai S

If you can get a trailer with surge brakes I would do that.

Otherwise I would consider it marginal. How much is the towed load?

I second the vote for borrowing a pickup. After many years towing things behind cars I bought a Chevrolet 3500 for the task. Trailer brakes are a real lifesaver at times.

I've used tow dollies twice. I'd rather go slow with a trailer than use a dolly again.

When you get a hitch, ALWAYS get an automatic trans cooler (external) added as well. There are some pretty good hills between NYC and Carlisle.

Also, only use o/d on long flat sections. Yes, keeping it in 3rd will make the engine sing, but it's worth it to save the trans. Volvo says don't use o/d at all, but it's ok under low load, i.e. flats.

I tow our boat (@2000 pounds) nearly every weekend with our '95 960 with no problems. Although the ramp we use is VERY steep, there are few substantial elevation changes where I live, so I don't know how the car would do if you have to tow through continuous hills and mountains. There is another who posts here regularly who frequently tows cars with a 960 with no apparent difficulty. The towing capacity for the 960's is 3500 pounds (with a max 300 pound toungue weight). Hope this helps

give yourself lots of time and space between the car in front of you. start off late (when traffic is down). i'd borrow a pickup minimum.
i'd drive the duett and bring a tool box if needed, and carry my triple-A card.
good luck.

I would recommend a tow dolly over a trailer. The trailer will weigh as much or more than the car.
