bad wheel bearings? 200

Hi. With the front wheel of the ground, I can shake both wheels. That is the only problem I see. The tire wear is even, no strange noises and it handles OK. I assumed wheel bearings but before I bought any I did some research. A lot of problems that were mentioned, I don't share. I want to see if there could be something else or is some wiggle acceptable. Thanks. BTW: 180K miles, '88 240 wagon

Update: Today I removed the bearings, cleaned out the old grease, put in new grease and put it all back together. The wiggle is gone. I believe that the bearings had been replaced once and they looked fine. I drive 5 miles up a mountain on a bumpy dirt road to get home. Perhaps that created a need for an adjustment. Thanks for the feedback.

If you're grabbing the wheel at 12 and 6 and get play, then suspect wheel bearings. If you're grabbing it at 3 and 9, you're moving alot more than just wheel bearings. Ball joints, tierods, steering rack. Normally wheel bearings show themselves with noise, usually occuring in a turn. So, if you have no noise, tirewear, drift, etc, why do you suspect you have a problem?

It is at 12 and 6 only. The only reason I suspect a problem is the wiggle when I shake it. I raised the car for something else and out of habit I shook the wheels.

Not sure what type you have. Mine is where I can regrease the outer, tighten the nut to 42 ft/lbs, then back off a 1/4 turn.

If the wheel spins OK and the bearings don't feel rough, just adjust the castelated nut a fraction. If you keep them greased every 100,000 miles they last forever.
