SU vacuum source 444-544

I'm getting ready to install a vacuum gauge. My intake manifold is early style (no vacuum source). Where on either SU would be a spot to attach a vacuum hose?
The car is together and I definitly do not want to drill and tap at this point. (If that's what it takes, I'll have to add to next winter's project list!).

    Kai,
    Even the very early B18 manifolds like mine, a 1962, have a screw plug at the radiator end. It may take a couple of days' soaking in PB Blaster and/or heat to get it out. In fact, I had to weld a bolt onto it to get it to turn because previous attempts at removal had stripped the socket.

      The earlier 2 bolt air filter carb bodies with vacuum advance distributors had a barbed ferrule type brass inlet inserted into a small diameter (1/8" or less) hole which was drilled into a machined boss on the top face of the rear carb outboard of the piston bell. Someone with an earlier original setup should be able to supply a photo. It wouldn't be that big a deal to pull the filter and drill the hole in place. I don't even think the barb was threaded - just a press fit, tap it in. If you're worried about filings you could always just pull the rear carb and do it on the bench or drill press.

    Kai;

    ...is this strictly for a gauge? (I've found these of limited use), or is it for vacuum for your dist (in which case anywhere downstream from the throttle would do it)...the HS6s often have a little machined area for a vacuum fitting...a close inspection will reveal where on the carb body this is (I've seen it even on the mounting flange...maybe someone can supply a pic)...otherwise a tiny hole in the manifold will do it...

    Cheers
