87 245 - 75-80 mph, loaded - 24 MPG - Sound about right ? 200

Did a long trip this weekend. 4, people & two dogs. Running 75-8o mph most of the trip managed about 24 mpg, does this sound about right or should I be looking at adjusting/repairing? Last time the plugs came out - the color was good. So I assume things are in good shape.

    Fuel economy info 200

Some of you may already know that I've become a fuel economy fiend.

I really want to encourage brickboarders to get active at the fuel economy sites below. There's new ground being broken in fuel economy on a grass-roots basis and we can do better with these cars than we have been.

For excellent tips on getting more mpg you can visit
    gassavers.org
    cleanmpg.com
At cleanmpg, pay a visit to "Articles" and see "Beating the EPA" by Wayne Gerdes.

I'm registered at both sites as brucepick.
You can see all member's gas mileage logs at cleanmpg's "Milelage Logs" page.

I can tell you that it's possible for an '89 auto tranny 245 to get 30-32 mpg in highway driving, summer weather, day in and day out. But that would require modified driving habits (not a steady 65 or 70) and probably some modifications to the car. I was getting 23-25 mpg this past winter with snow tires. Previous winters were more like 20-22 mpg. Again, it required some effort on my part.

My fuel economy modifications: E-fan, air dam extension and forward belly pan added, open-front airbox for cold air intake via AC condenser "grate", and 15 inch 35 psi tires running at 37-38 psi. They're actually more stable and heat up less at the higher pressure due to less flexing.

I recall the sign in the old Hot Rod shop: "Speed Costs Money - How Fast Do You Want To Go?"

Same with fuel consumption. Both the 83-240 and the 940 will do about 30 highway mi per US Gal. at speeds of 65-70MPH. Back in the 55MPH days the 83 would get about 33MPG.

Arguably, the sedans are a bit better streamlined (if you can use that word in reference to a 240!) than the wagons, so for your speeds, the fuel economy is in the ballpark. Loaded weight should make little difference on fairly level roads at steady speeds.

Spark plugs and change interval - I use NGK's which are considered a top quality plug. But I find the gaps open up due to metal erosion. This probably applies to all copper electrode plugs. Twice now I have pulled a set at 30k mi and found the original gap of .028 is now .040. Hard starts were becoming routine. So I'd suggest pulling them every 10-15k mi and checking/regapping or replacing. At $8 for a set, it's a very cheap tune-up.

Sounds good to me, unless you are running tires that are of smaller circumference than the stock size. What size are you running on the rear wheels?

    Regards,

Given the speeds and a pretty full load, you did just fine. "The giant sucking sound you hear" is all those 6000-pound pickups and SUVs fuel tanks being sucked dry as they keep up with you.

yep, still better than many cars after 20 years. you can probably replace the plugs every 100k miles. your problem would be rust and vac leaks.

that's about right for my 86 245 goin 75-85 mph.

    Close enough :)

With a full load like that, just make sure your tire pressures are at the high end.
My V70 loaded got 23.5 with the cruise set at 84 across Nebraska to Denver, and I got 26.9 on the return trip. At 75-80 I will get around 27mpg with a light load.

funny--our nonturbo 850 wagon gets 20 mpg in town and only 24, 25 tops, highway. have replace maf meter recently, and it didn't change the fuel economy. i wonder what else contributes to lower specs...

My ex's '97 855 got 22-24 in suburban driving and a max of 28 on the highway, depending on speeds and load. FWIW, also ran 205/60-15 tires at 36 psi.

Clean air filter, new plugs, clean injectors, synthetic engine oil, tread pattern and depth, tire pressure, clean/waxed car, no roof rack, and the list goes on.

      Hi Klaus,

I'm interested in your fuel returns - can I safely presume you are talking about a US gallon - ours in the UK is 4.54 litres, which gives a significantly different return.

My 850 T5 averages about 30mpg overall and as much as 33 on the open road. How that would compare to your V70 in US terms I don't know, but with cost of a litre nearly TWO DOLLARS in England, you bet some of us are pretty careful about burn-rate...

      Cheers

One USA gallon = 3.78 litres. I will let you do the math. I always thought Imperial gallons consisted of 4 litres, oh well.

did the maths and it works out at about 25 - 27.5 mpusg

that .54 makes a big difference, when i started driving a gbgallon cost around 17 pence (say 30 cents), now its nearly £4.50 say $9.00 - so a mile up the road is over 35 cents... makes you think; and it certainly makes me keep the two volvos in tiptop shape

consider yourself lucky. Outside of very large cities in the USA, there is NO public transportation. And due to the design, or lack of, of the suburban and rural areas, a car is a necessity and not optional.
My nearest bus stop is 1.1 miles and that is for the morning and evening rush hour traffic to the center of Minneapolis. Grocery, dry cleaners, etc. are 2,5 miles of very hilly terrain. Shopping malls are 30 minutes by car. Most hamlets and towns in the USA do not have a "center" for shoping.

My 1989 244 recently got 26.1 MPG on mostly highway driving at about 65 MPH. I was surprised (and pleased) by that because the EPA rating is only 24 on the highway. I have not checked city mpg yet.
