My 245 was taking names yesterday! 200

So I applied for a job to make some extra cash as a valet parking attendant. Part of the interview process is driving through a slalom course and backing into a few very tight parking spaces while being timed. What I didn't realize is that I was going to be using my own car to do this. There were 5 other guys taking the test also. The first guy drove a little acura integra. He pulled out of the parking spot and after rounding his first cone had to back up and correct. After making it around the next cone he had to stop and correct again, it took him a long time and you could tell he had trouble seeing out the back window while he was reversing into the parking spots. The next guy drove a VW Jetta, his run was nearly indentical to the first guys, slow with numerous corrections. The other guys had to drive the valet managers VW Golf because their cars were automatic and you had to do the course with a stick, the Golf was a really sporty ride that I was sure would have no problem making it through the course, but it didn't, it had similar results as the two previous.
I was the last to attempt the course, when I pulled up in my 245 "Big Blue" the interviewer suggested I use his Golf but I just had a feeling I would be better off in my familiar volvo even though it is a bohemoth. So I pulled out of the slip and made a wide sweep then turned into the first set of cones, made it no problem. Turned into the second and again no problem, then the third and only on the last did I have to back up and make a slight correction. I whipped the car around and backed into the spot with ease and 4 or 5 inches on either side to spare. There isn't a blind spot on the 245 and you know exactly where your back bumber is, 4" past the back window allowing for a brisk sweep into the parking spot. After I returned to the beginning of the course I drove up to greet 6 people, all jaws dropped. I actually did it in half the time of every other person. Score one for the 245!

Great story - Isn't the whole phrase "Taking names and kicking A" ?

When we got the wifemobile (1997 965) in May 2005 we worried a bit about maybe losing that tight 240 32-ft. turning circle that allows parking in a sardine can!

No sweat, the 965 has spec of 31.7 ft turning circle. I really don't recall the precise turning circle of the 240s, may be the same.

Old story - In Paris there is a large traffic circle called the Etoile (star), much larger than the UK roundabouts or US traffic circles. Why? Story goes that the French-made Citroen 4-CV cars (4-door, suicide doors, two chevrons on grille) needed about 45 feet to turn around.

There are so many reasons to keep a Volvo RWD.

    Regards,

    Bob

Yeah, The 245 is a pretty tough beast when it comes to maneuvering in parking lot competitions. Fun showing off how you can do a 180 in about a carlength!

When it comes to backing up, only a 745 can outdo it in terms of visibility.

I trust you got the job? :-)

my wife borrowed my brother's '91 honda accord (4 door) and was shocked she couldnt make a u turn on our street without hitting the curb. she had to make a 3 point turn. with our 245's excellent turning radius she's stopped complaining when she has to take 'the old wagon' to the store.

Damn skippy. Stupid FWD drive system makes for WIDE turns. Just one more reason to hang out in the RWD froum :)

I used to be a valet attendant. 245 a behemoth? Heck, try it in a '76 Cadillac Fleetwood!

So true! Nobody even measures this anymore. My wife's Subaru with that wide boxer style motor, can't turn around anywhere! I tell her it's subaru's dirty little secret, they don't tell you abou tit when the expound the supposed virtues of their motor in all their advertising.
I am always amazed howq much room I need to make a simple U-turn compared to my 142,

My 245 puts my mothers Chevy Cavaler to shame with low speed turns.
The turning aspect drove me bonkers when I borrowed her car.

When I first got the car I noticed it was not quite as good as my 1969 Toyota Carolla, but it was only about 3"inches different.

I believe that toyota was the smallest toyota inported to the states.

Yea it was about 40 years between the two mesurements taken, But I did use the same 2 curbs in frount of my mothers house. They are still the same 30 feet apart.
          I remeasured it.
