Which was is best to be wrong? Assume that there is water in there, and there isn't, or the other way 'round?

IMO the safest way is to assume water.

Thinking way out of the box, how about baking it? Water boils at 212F at sea level, so it would leave as steam, leaving the ATF behind. NOT AT HOME. Fire/explosion hazard, I would guess.

Call your nearby tranny shop, like AAMCO or A+, better yet- visit. See if you can chat with a tech, they might have actual experience, maybe a large oven?
Bring along a reward, such as a $30 gift card to Chili's, or some such.

Get another torque convertor. Maybe the tranny shop or a Volvo shop or dealer has one from a tranny that was replaced for other reasons, like cratered valve body.

Just a bunch of SWAG ideas.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
