Dyno Test and points 140-160

Well, my Volvo avoided the shop like a kid avoids the dentist. I tuned up the car for the dyno, it ran fine. The next day on the way to work the points starting slipping in the dizzy. I would drive a little further and the points would slip out again. I cancelled the dyno test. On the way home I pulled out the points I installed and noticed a thick film of clean oil on the dizzy's points platform. It is a new distributor with less than 800 miles on it. Maybe there was excess oil in the felt pad? I cleaned up the points platform and sight set the points and limped home. The new points really changed the timing compared to the point adjustments I made with the oily points.
I had a busy weekend so I will be trying to get to the retune today. Never seen points shift like that. I am hoping it was the oil. Any thoughts?
For sure I am going to solid state point system soon. It sure is nice to have a new dizzy that you can set the point gap by sight (verified with meter). After the forth time setting them in a day, it got pretty easy to dial up the right dwell.

Page 9-1 of their online catalog has a 123ignition for 100 series volvo. There's also a video comparing regular points vs Pertronix vs 123ignition.

The only breaker points I know of that have that little felt rubbing pad are Bluestreak/Echlin, and and I wouldn't use them in a lawnmower. If you don't have Bosch breaker points, get some. Use nothing else. Same with the condensor.

I tuned the engine to specs and drove yesterday evening and to work this morning. Running like a "Bat out of the inner portions of the earth"

I believe the excess oil caused the points to slip or was causing the cam contact to swell up. Never happened to me before.

Will work on the breakerless points soon, after I switch out shocks on my truck.

It is good to see a lot of 140 series owners on line these days, especially the new folks.

Thanks
Joel

140s... 140-160

Yeah, they've been getting very popular lately... All the rage on Turbobricks now, and I've let 4 slip through my fingers, only to be left with none right now... :(

Can't wait for you to get that thing on the dyno! Good luck with the points and converting!

The only time I ever had a problem like that was when the advance mecanism
came apart in my 164 and the weights were machining a groove in the cast arn
distributor case. With a new distributor that SHOULD not be a problem!

I hope to test drive with new points this evening. I tuned it yesterday evening. It seemed to hold the points gap so far. I am suspect of the points I have and are they the proper replacement for my distributor.
I have to find the points for the breakerless ignition and install. That is the sensible thing to do. I know there are past threads on the subject, I hope to locate. The first time I tried to install, I could not get it right.

Thanks for the reply. Keep cool George
