89 240 Air Mass Meter 200

My car began running really badly a couple of days ago. Wouldn't idle, big stumble at all speeds, had to feather the throttle to make it move at all. Seemed to steady off at about 3,000 rpm but was still weak.

After looking at the FAQs, I disconnected the air mass meter. It immediatly started and idled at about 1,200 rpm. It still stumbles, but not as badly.

This is a bad air mass meter, right?

Just looking for confirmation before replacing an expensive bit.

Thanks

Zimm

OK, got the correct AMM from a parts yard yesterday. I also found that the thermostat in the air box was holding the flap open that allows air from the exhaust manifold to enter. Thats probably what killed the AMM.

Install the part, fire up the car, runs fine. Fixed a crack in the exhuaust at the catalytic convertor flange and took it for a test run. Ran fine, no more exhaust leak, great.

This morning. Cranks but no start. $%&@%$%&^#W$!!!

The fuel pump relay was replaced about 5 years ago. The crank sensor about 2 years ago. Plugs are fresh, coil is new. Cap and roter are in good shape. Plug wires are about 3-4 years old. Weather conditions were still and damp with lots of humidity. The 25 amp fuse looked good.

Any thoughts?? Mine are running to large hammers.

When I had an AMM fail it would not start. If you disconnect the connector (key off) the engine will idle fine but stumble and drive poorly, this is a limp home mode. And I mean limp home. Dan

Clean it before you replace it. Get CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner or similar, pull out the amm, spray the heck out of the inside of it until the gunk all drips out. Worked wonders on two of mine. Hate to think how many amms have been replaced needlessly. If it doesn't do the job, you're out $5 or $6 for the effort, and you have the peace of mind of knowing you need a new one.

I used it on my AMM and I seemed to have regained 1-2 MPG. Good stuff! Also use an electrical cleaner (DE-Oxit from radio shack is highly recommended) on the connector. May be all you need.

Sounds like typical AMM failure. Before buying a new one, just get a couple used ones. One for now, one in the trunk for later. A lot cheaper than a new one.

My local yard had hopelessly wrong information in their cross reference book when I needed an amm.

Look at the last 3 digits on the # on the amm. I believe for the '89's with auto trans it's 017. That's what you need to match when you pull a used one. Should be any amm from a 240 '89-'93. Likely that non-turbo late 740s will also have what you need. Check fcpgroton - look up their part # information for 240s and 740s.

Actually, only turbo 740/940's are likely to have the -016 AMM outside of California (said in my best impersonation of Hanz and Franz).

Most non-turbo 740/940's got the Regina FI system, so no AMM. Whereas later turbo's will have LH 2.4, and the -016 AMM. California models 240/740/940 should have LH 2.4 w/EGR... and I believe that also has the -016 AMM.

Supposedly, older LH2.2 (-007??) AMM's will work in later 240's. Haven't tried it myself...

I can say that the gnarly used $40 replacement AMM I put in my 240 a year and a half ago is still going pretty strong, and I've got another one on the shelf for when it does fail. There's just no sense in buying a brand new Bosch AMM (at $400 a pop) until the used supply runs dry.
