Driver door air leak 700

The seal that surrounds the drivers door glass is leaking air badly
and very noisy at highway speeds. The leak is in the upper rear corner.

I found a seal at the bone yard and wonder if there is some trick to
replacing it. It looks like some magic act to reinstall.

    Chronic 'Window regulator' problem 700

I was quite surprised when I searched Brickboard for "window regulator", and found
that my "Whistling Window" problem seems to be a chronic Volvo problem;89 740GL.
I found dozens of people reporting that the drivers window didn't close right, yada yada.
It seems that of the dozens of posts, people wind up replacing the regulators.
No one seems to have found the regulator repair.

    What do you know?
    Notes:
*I can't find FAQ, as the drop down links are inoperative. (I just need the file name)
*There seems to be no slack to adjust the regulator assy with the 4 studs.
    * The sector gear doesn't run true. Something deformed.
    * There's a LOT of slop with the scizzors and from the way It's working,
I'm guessing that either one or both arms is bent, or something screwy
    at the pivot/s
*I haven't removed that assy to get a good look at it. Does the glass remove
    easily from the regulator?

The drivers window doesn't close right in the upper rear corner. The glass is
falling forward some, to fall slightly out of the window seal that looks OK.

Maybe someone has "been there, with the T-shirt" and all?

    Thanks, Bill

        Thanks Steve,

Which FAQ following BodyGlas? is that Body sunroof? I can't tell.

I was barking up the wrong tree with the seal. The seal is easy to replace,
but now I see that there is a lot of slop in the window regulator.
The window just about falls out of the upper rear seal because of this slop.
I haven't had time to yank that regulator out to see if there's a fix for
this problem other than a new regulator.
I'll post back, should I get lucky.

        Bill

The two earlier replies were mine. I have no idea why they were deleted. They referred to inner mechanism that raises/lowers the glass being worn, as the likely source of the noise. I suggested that you try to tip the glass up and back while raising it, and see if the noise changes or goes away. It does in my car but I'm not sure which internal piece is bad yet.

      Thanks Jerry,

I've been busy with other stuff working on a list of items.
The driver's window still whistles like mad at the top rear corner.
I can stop most of the leak with the tip of my finger.
Im wondering if the seal can be shimmed from the back to close that
      wind tunnel?

It may be a routine failure with wear and time, and maybe I need a
      new one from Folvo, Gulp!

(If nothing else does it) might be possible to gently tweak the channel
for the seal at the corner to move the inside edge of the seal closer
to the glass. A little quality hammer work. :-)

I found a few references to this problem but no solutions.

      Cheers, Bill

I don't know, but don't think that doing things to the seal will help you. Did you try to nudge the glass as I mentioned? That may tell you what direction to go in. THe movement is very slight to your hand, but it moves the glass back to where it's supposed to be at the back of the window. If that has effect, then the problem is in the up/down mechanism in the door.

    Driver door air leak 700

    Hello all,

I had two responses to this post and somehow they were deleted?
They suggested that there is some part s at the bottom of the glass to seat the windo right.
The new glass seal did not solve the problem, does anyone have details
to get the glass to shut properly?

    Thanks, Bill 1989 740GL sedan

Are you sure the glass is riding correctly in the channels? See the FAQ for tips on making sure the small clips have not broken.

        Thanks Steve,

I couldn't find anything at all in the FAQ's.

I did find something in the archives "Whistling Window"
where the thread was about worn regulator parts and unfortunately
no one bothered to post the eventual solution.

I'll open the door up again and punt.

        Thanks, Bill

Try this: it could just be a closing issue. BTW, if you replace the seal and figure out how to do it, send the solution to me for the FAQ.

the noise sounds like the same as my car and is caused by the glass tilting in the frame, not the rubber. There's some part in the mechanism that raises/lowers the glass and wears, and lets the front of the glass tilt.
Try pushing on the glass near the top front as you raise the window; push it a bit up and back and see if the noise goes away.
To fix, you have to disassemble the door innards but I'm not yet sure which piece is the right one to replace. There is a blue plastic piece, one at each end of the glass, and there's a white plastic piece that connects the two metal scissors. It's one or the other I believe.
