ac fan will not come on 200 1991

I have a new shroud and fan and new compressor. The fan will not come on. Could the problem be in the relay or the high pressure switch

ac fan will not come on 200 1991

    Hi there,

Just today I re-wired a 91's fan relay to come on with the compressor clutch, because the high pressure switch would become flaky after running some time.

1991 is the first year for 240s to sport the new system with orifice tube and helper fan on the condenser. The relay is rather simple, operating only the fan, turned on by the high pressure switch whenever AC is on (and alternator delay is complete). I just pulled those two pins and pushed them and their gray wires back in the harness sleeve, and tapped into the clutch wire (green) where it comes closest. Saving some of those terminals from another old harness plug helped, so I didn't need to cut the gray wires.

No way am I going to lose the R12 or get a shop to do that just to replace that high pressure switch.

Anyway, check at the relay. If all is working properly you should have +12 batt switched by the two large red wires, and +12 on one of the gray wires always (if the compressor is running) and the other gray wire switched to ground by the high pressure switch.

The high pressure switch would keep the compressor from running as well. If this car has the later type AC with the aluminum accumulator next to the passenger side firewall, then it may be the fan relay which is mounted on top of the coil... typically black in color.

Before you replace any parts, realize that the fan only comes on when the pressure on the high side hits a certain point, not when the compressor switch is on (like many other vehicles).

On my '91 I was concerned that the fan was not working so I taped a thin strip of tissue paper to a fan blade and the bracket so I could tell if it activated. The fan did not come on until temps were in the 90's and I had been in stop and go traffic for 30 minutes. Since then I have heard it cycle occasionally, but only on high temp, high humidity days or after extended use.

It shouldn't be to much of a job to wire the fan to run when the compressor is turned on, but I don't think it is necessary as long as your temps (both A/C and coolant) are OK. A clean condenser and radiator along with a functioning fan clutch are much more important than the aux. fan in my experience.

Just thought I would add that my car is still running R-12. I see that you have a new compressor and you may have converted to R-134. If you have made the switch, you will benefit from having the fan running continuously as the condenser will be less efficient.
