help for speedometer malfunction 200 1981

Recently, my speedo quit working. Since I had replaced the drive cable a couple of years ago, I made an operating assumption that cable had broken again. New cable ordered, installed, still no function. Unplugged end from speedo, jacked car up and ran in gear to see if cable was spinning. No dice.

At this point, what should I be looking for? Bentley and/or Haynes are not of any real help.

My appeal goes out to those more knowledgeable than I on the board.

Thanks,
Jeff

The gear plugs into the tranny and is held in place by a triangular metal plate and allen key bolt (standard trans, I think automatic is same). O-rings keep it from leaking.

Next thing I would do is check the speedo drive at the gearbox. You should be able to see it spin with the cable disconnected. If it isn't spinning the speedo drive gear in the geabox is probably stripped. I think its just a plastic gear, but I have never had to repblace one. If it is spinning it must have something to do with your cable or how it is attached to the gearbox.

Thanks, I will check that out. Can you refresh me on the proper sequence for the triangular piece, washers, and allen bolt? I may have put them back in not quite the right sequence.

      Jeff
