Tranny Tail Seal Replacement - ok I'm stumped! 700 1990

Using this tutorial ( http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-90..._Shaft_Bushing ) I have spent the day trying to replace the automatic transmission tail seal/gasket/bushing on my 1990 Volvo 740GLE.

I removed the necessary bolts, removed the crossmember and tranny mount, and undid the bolts holding the housing. I just can't get the flange out of the center of the housing in order to remove the housing from the tranny. How do you remove this section?

The round disk in the center of this pic is to what I refer:

Never worked on the autoboxes before but it seems like there should be a couple of holes in the shaft housing to push the flange out. If so they may be packed w/ grease and hard to spot.

I would think a harmonic balancer puller would work, just don't run the pressure screw into the threaded hole. Probably won't take much force.

Try Autozone or similar stores, possibly you can rent one although I believe they are pretty cheap.

It has been awhile but I believe you should be able to tap on the back edge of the flange and have it come off. You have the center bolt off so the splines are evidently holding it in place.

I would put the transmission in neutral and rotate the flange occasionally as you tap (perhaps agressively) on the back edge.

I've soaked the flange with liquid wrench and went around the perimeter with a rubber mallet. Still won't budge. I didn't try putting it in neutral, however...

In any case, I think it's puller time. Only problem is that I've never used one, nor do I know what it looks like. Would I be able to get one from the local auto parts store? Hardware store?

Rubber mallet probably isn't going to do it. Brass hammer would be my first choice, with a standard ballpeen hammer being next.

A puller similiar to one on HarborFreight's site (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45977
was mentioned in another response to your post. As he suggested be careful if you use one to protect the area where you want the bolt to be reinstalled so as not to damage the threads. There are several things you might use on the end of the central threaded rod on the puller to do this. A carefully sized hex nut that would clear the flange sides and focus force on the shaft would be a good choice.

You might find that Advanced Auto or Autozone have pullers in their "free rental" programs.

I picked up a puller that should do the job. I figured a couple of washers on the end of the shaft should keep the threaded area of the flange safe...

Okay, I am starting to get pissed off.

The flange WILL NOT BUDGE, and my roommates are starting to get sick of the Volvo sitting up on stands in the driveway.

Penetrating oil, whacks with hammer, three-arm puller - nothing has worked so far. It will not come off. HELP!

Assuming those protective washers are small enough not to interfere with the flange, are you also smacking the end of the puller with a BFHammer when the pulling force is cranked on?

The shock of a hammer impact is usually what breaks things loose, as opposed to just the pulling force by itself.

Tranny Tail Seal Replacement - ok I'm stumped! 700 1990

After about 6-7 hours of trying!

Ok I kinda feel like an idiot... I didn't realize initially that the 3-leg puller could be adjusted by moving the 1st leg down further on the 2nd leg (there are about 3 holes along the length of the leg).

GOT IT! Once I had gotten the puller all the way down to where it couldn't be tightened any more, the damn flange popped off! What a freaking load off my shoulders.

After I took off the housing, I noticed a couple long-ish (2") metal shards right on the edge of the tranny housing. I was very worried until I saw the state that the rear seal was in (the round object in the front left corner of the pic):

The object behind it is the NEW rear seal. It looks like the seal's metal outer ring separated somehow, and got eaten up and became the metal shards I found. I think it's safe to say that I found my transmission oil leak.

Tomorrow it all goes back together..... I hope.

So here's my new set of questions:
                1) is the rear seal installed so the "closed" end with the rubber lip is pressed against the flange, facing the driveshaft, and the "open" end facing the transmission housing? It looks like this is the case, but the seal I replaced was so mangled that it's hard to tell.

                2) When I removed the housing, the fabled bushing, it appears, was on the ouput shaft aft of the spindles. Most of the tutorials I read seem to imply that the bushing would be in the housing itself and that it would be a pain to get out. Do I just pull it off the shaft just like pulling the flange off the shaft?

Ok my old bushing was definitely NOT in the housing, it is on the tranny output shaft. Moreover, the new bushing slides right into the housing with very little resistance; in other words, I can push it in with bare hands. Is this going to be a problem?

Yes, this will be a problem as it is. Not insurmountable. Before you return your puller, take it to the self-serve parts yard, and repeat what you've done so far on another Volvo. Make sure to ask them to get the car up where you can work under it safely. The bushing must have spun in the governor housing and left you with a useless part. Be sure you drain the pan and clean out all the metal bits before you drive that one again. That's what I would do, anyway. Others would just swap the tranny, as they are likely to be good units bought used.

                        Don't you mean tailshaft housing???

Yes, sorry, tailshaft housing. Governor's whats under it. That's what you want to keep real clean. Volvo calls it the "extension housing" in their book. Less trouble to pull than the whole tranny in my view.

    hello
i believe a proper spanner tool is in order, but i used a pipe wrench on the flange very carefully..
its not a fun job at all.
people say if the old gasket didnt break to just put some rtv silecone on there and your good to go.
    good luck
    mike
