444 Trunk badge 444-544 1958

Hi all, sorry I can't include a photo of what I am asking about right now but there seems to be server issues. Anyway what is the trunk badging on Late (58) 444s?
Mine has a 444 with two holes above it about 4 to 5" apart but there is nothing there, was a Volvo script supposed to go there or what?

TIA
OK
PS any thoughts on 12V conversions Vs. leaving the 6V in place?

Hi Dave: I have a picture of the definitive answer to all PV trunk badges. Maybe Tony can extract it from a source I gave to him (page 9047) if I don't post it first (early and my long haired colonel calls). The 1958 had the VOLVO script on the left bottom, with a large V above the trunk handle, then 444 above that. Prior to 1958, the VOLVO was centred on the trunk, above the 444. Here's a link to my 1953.

      I found a picture of the rear of a 1957/58 PV444 "LS".

And another a bit overdone.... IMHO

Note: Sport emblem is an add-on and may signify a "Sport" engine.

        Cam,

I'm guessing that is what my trunk badging should look like too when I'm finished with the restoration, correct? Unfortunately the trunk lid that I have [already painted] is from a 544 and has the "-444-" holes drilled above the "Volvo" script holes. I guess if I ever want it to be correct I am going to have to get some holes filled in. Shouldn't be a problem for the old bodyshop. :)

        Thanks again.

        Regards,

    6V to 12V 444-544 1958

Back in the mid 70's (whew! that long ago) I put a B18 in a 444 and changed everything to 12V. The most difficult thing as I recall was working out a way for the single bulb tail lights to function as stop, running and turn signal (which I guess had been the case with 6V, so I can't see what the problem was). I swapped out the wiper motor for a 12V unit which required some engineering because of the actuating arm having to be relocated on the motor shaft in the off position. Also the heater blower motor for 12V. Aside from changing out the bulbs, I don't remember other significant problems.

Yes, I believe that area should have the "Volvo" in script on our '58 444s. That is, as long as you have the US export version, PV 444 L, model 44408.

Click here for a picture of the 544 with the "Volvo" insignia in script.

Thanks Tony and Danny, I am pretty sure that the fragment of the script that was still on the trunk is 1/2 or so of the 'V' in the photo provided.
If anyone has one of these, or a source, I am in the market.
On the 12V conversion I have not decided - I am inclined to stay with 6V (I like orig. equipment) but I think the 12V might make more sense and would be easier and more usable if I decide to drive the car much. What have you decided (6 or 12V) on the Old Lady Tony?

      Thanks & Cheers!

on the subject of 12v or 6v, mine is still 6v with some 12v parts, the cd player etc so i got a 6v to 12v inverter from ebay that trickle charges a 12v batry in the boot, but my mate converted 6v car to 12v with a transformer for the awkward bits like wiper motors , they are still 6v. it was easier than finding 12v replacement motors.

I have decided to go to 12V, with the wipers, coil, starter solenoid and instruments staying 6V via resistors. This is relativly easy to do on the 444 via a shunt to the lighting circuit.
What are you refering to when you say "a transformer for the awkward bits"? Sounds as you are possibly using something better than resistors (wastful and produce heat)for this application.

          TIA

YOU CAN BY A TRANSFORMER THAT HAS A 12V IN VOLTAGE AND GIVES 6V OUT, ITS BASICALY A COIL BUT WILL HAVE THERMAL CUT OUT ETC, RADIO SHACK OR MOST ELECTRONIC /ELECTRICAL WHOLESALERS SHOULD DO IT,, EVEN EBAY

I have completely decided to stay with 6V. I won't be driving the car much except for maybe a few times a month, and probably all during the day so the 6V should do me just fine.

        Regards,
