Dear dfeew99,
May this find you well. Up to and including model year 1994, 940 and 960 instrument clusters will interchange. The connectors on the back of the cluster are "male", the wiring harness connectors are "female". For 1995 and later 940s and 960s, the gender is reversed: connectors on the back of the cluster are "femal" and the wiring harness connectors are "male".
Most of the 740 clusters will not interchange with a 940 or a 960, because the 740 cluster "shell" is rectangular, while the 940/960 clusters have a rounded top. Further, the individual instruments mount differently. The gauges in a 740 cluster are made to fit into square openings. The gauges in a 940 cluster are made to fit into a round opening.
While the tachometer, clock, and speedometer are all round (740, 940 and 960), the connector formats likely vary. As I only operate 940s, I've never tried to put a speedo from a 740 into a 940 cluster.
The turbo indicator is built into the bottom of the tachometer. Any 1991-94 tachometer, from a 940 turbo, will interchange.
To be sure of a good fit, take a cluster from any 940 or 960, 1991-94 (inclusive).
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
spook
