Well... A passenger managed to track gum into my 242, and got it on the carpeting.

Any tips or tricks on removing it?

An interesting phenomenon I have noticed that might suggest a method:

If you are chewing a piece of gum, and put chocolate in your mouth at the same time, and chew them together, the gum rapidly disintegrates.

Of course, you would then have the problem of removing a chocolatey mess from the carpet...

When i was a kid I got gum in my hair. I remember that my Dad used lighter fluid to get it out.
No flames!

Diethyl ether works. Don't breathe it or smoke near it.

I've had good luck with, believe or not, WD40.

The way carpet cleaning co's do this is use a can of freezer spray to make it hard and brittle and then break it up with pliers picking the bits away still frozen.

A sequence of solvents would probably work - gum pretty much disolves in oils, that's why kids often get peanut butter put on their head when they get gum stuck in their hair.

If you can find an oil that disolves it you can get the oil out with soap and water afterwards.

Try using a can of air. The kind for cleaning computer keyboards. Hold it upside down and spray. It will freeze the gum and make it hard and solid. Then just pick it away. Don't inhale this stuff very bad for brain cells.

I agree - I know in movie theatres, they use canned air or a similar freezing agent to solidify recalcitrant gum and other treats and clean them up.

1990 245 w/252k mi - Just finished a 1700 mile trip with no hicups. Must get a sawzall to remove my recalcitrant driver's side RTAB. And fix a wheel bearing that started to make itself known on the mountain roads. If it's not one thing... ;)
