89 740 Dimmer switch sticking 700

My headlight dimmer switch is sticking and needs replacing.... Is this an easy item to replace and are they expensive? I have not seened replacement parts listed with any of the online Volvo parts companies... Thanks Jim

I think it's fairly uncommon to have to replace the combination turn signal/headlight dimmer switch stalk and if you did, buying a used one would make much more economic sense than buying new. The switch just passes low voltage through the contacts to drive relays so the contacts should not pit and become troublesome. However, that doesn't mean the switch can't become sticky or dirty, although even that is uncommon. You could try removing the steering column cowls to access the switch. You'd want to try to squirt something like WD-40 into the guts to get at every moving part followed by spraying contact cleaner into the switch contact areas through every available orifice. Removing the switch stalk from the steering column would make this process easier and more effective.

However, having said that, your problem is more likely in the headlight stepping relay. That is a replaceable part. As that's a high amperage relay, be sure to pull the relay tray right out and inspect under the headlight relay for possible signs of a bad wiring connection by looking for burned areas and melted plastic.
