AC Belt tension - keeps snapping 900

Hello,
My AC belt, even w/o tensioning, is very taught, probably only 1/2 inch of play. This has resulted in 3 snapping on me. after loosening all 4 pivot bolts (or even 6 if I'm feeling crazy) and loosening the tensioner, I still can't loop the belt easily over the crank pulley. So, I get it most of the way on and give the engine a partial crank which forces it on. Then, w/ the tensioner bolt loose, I tighten all the pivot bolts. Its still tight! Can anyone suggest a slightly larger belt that still has the thick width? Or, some other solution?

BTW: this is a '94 940 w/ the A/C on its own belt.

Thanks!

It should not break; the spec is about 3/8 play with moderate finger pressure. Take a hard look at the belt alignment: I will bet one or more of your rubber compressor mounting bushings is shot.
