I am considering the purchase of a 1994 940 wagon (89K miles) with B230FD engine. Compared to the B230F on my 1993 940 wagon, the FD has Bosch FI instead of Regina. It also has some additional plumbing into the exhaust ports. Is the plumbing part of an air injection system ? Are there any maintenance issues with it ?

Any significant differences between Bosch and Regina FI that affect reliability ? The ones I know about are:

Bosch uses Air Mass Meter, Regina uses pressure and temperature sensors

Bosch has two fuel pumps (in tank and external), Regina has one fuel pump (in tank)

Should the FD engine deliver similar gas mileage to earlier engines ? The owner claims 23-1/2 on 20 mile trips, 27 on long highway trips. My 1993 940 wagon gets about 25 /28. My 1991 740 wagon gets about 27 / 29.

The plumbing is the Pulse Air system. There are two valves that need replacing after some time. If you pull the hoses and look down they should be replaced if the valve are black from soot. Otherwise the engine will breath exhausts. You could also plug the system if that is allowed were you live. I replaced the valves after about 230 kmiles.
Air Mass Meters will sometimes go bad but not frequently. I replaced one after about 60 kmiles. The replacement still runs OK at 280 kmiles.

I have B230FD engines in both of my 200k+ mile 940s. Your post is the first I have seen from someone who has experience with the Pulse Air system.

Where did you get replacement valves, dealer or after market? Cost?

How can they be plugged? Would I remove the hose and plug it, or do I plug the valve, or both? Or do I simply plug the vacuum hose?

The thick black rubber fitting that connects the valves to the hoses (top left front of engine) is cracked. It looks expensive. Did you replace it also? Do you have a source beside a dealer?

I bought the valves from the dealer but I don't remember the price. I'm away from home and can't check right now but probably around $50 for one valve. If my memory serves me right there was an earlier post that said that these valves were generic and could be replaced with common US parts.

I can't tell you how to plug since I didn't do it. On my 92 B230-FB there is no pulsair system and the air filter box connector for the rubber tube is plugged with a cap. This cap is probably available from the dealer. The cylinder head is not machined where the tubes connect as is done on my 93 B230-FD. I guess you could unscrew the two check valves and look for a cap with the proper thread. The vacuum hose for the black single inline valve should probably also be plugged.

No, the rubber tube was intact so I left it.

Differences:

1. Plumbing is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, a reliable device.
2. The 94 B230FD has only one tank pump similar to Regina and it is reliable.
3. Timing belt is changed every 100k miles.
4. Cylinders have oil squirters for better piston cooling.
5. FD engine gets comparable mileage to other non-turbos and on 89 octane fuel.

May this find you well. My 94 940 with B230FD engine has has two fuel pumps (an in-tank pre-pump and an externally-mounted main pump). I believe the oil squirters were put on all B230 engines made for the 1993 and later model years.

After the 1994 model year, cars with the B230FD engine have only one fuel pump. As with the cars equipped with Rex-Regina ignition, this fuel pump is in-tank.

Also, in the 1994 - and I believe later years - the fuel pump relay had a different format and location. Up to 1993, it was a white rectangular unit, mounted in the second row of the main relay block, on the end of the row closest to the driver. After 1993 - i.e. in 1994 and later - it was a small blue cube, mounted on the first row of the main relay block, towards the passenger end of the row.

I'd guess there are cars, that are exceptions to these general guidelines.

the daughters 94 940 has two pumps and the typical white fuel inj relay.
my 95 940 turbo has one pump and i will have to check the fuel inj relay.
i think the difference in regina/rex vs bosch is somewhat of a personal preference?
the rex/regina systems seem to bring up less problem posts on the brickboard from what i have seen.
i like the bosch system myself as there is more info on the brickboard when problems arise.
yes i/we have had three regina systems and many bosch systems.
you should be good with either one.

Perhaps Volvo made a running change during the 1994 model year? Our 1994 has the small Blue cube fuel relay described by Spook. Made by Hella in Spain. It has an internal diode to protect the ECU from voltage spikes, so is not interchangeable with ordinary 5-pin relays.
