    Hi There,
When you replace the pump don't forget to lever the bottom of the water pump upwards with all of the bolts slack and whilst you maintain the upward pressure tighten the bolts. This helps to ensure the top of the pump which push fits into the head makes a good seal. Personally I always use Loctite Autogasket on all sides of the gasket, the O ring and the seal from the heater return pipe into the seal and the seal into the head. As said by others here, use only the OEM water pump do not use a substitute it is not worth it. The straight Gearwrench ratcheting ring spanners make removing the bolts from the fan a breeze. If you tend to be clumsy like most of us a sheet of cardboard covering the radiator is a good idea in case you hit the fins with anything.

Replace it as soon as you possibly can.
Buy OEM Volvo pump. It's more, but it's worth it.

Don't forget to take the bolt out of the heater core return pipe bracket that secures it to the pump...it's almost impossible to see unless you're under the car.

While you're at it, good time to check alternator brushes and condition of wires/connections since you'll probably want to loosen the alt. bracket and slide it farther down to have more room.

Check the condition of the timing belt too, since you'll be removing the top cover for it.

Also nice to use pivotting head ratchet to remove fan nuts if your radiator fan shroud screws are completely rusted onto the bracket.....

You'll have no probs. Remember, anti-seize is your friend.

I would agree with you on most of it. However, the last 2 Volvo pumps I did were not machined properly and I had to add the "oblong" bolt holes (used for adjusting the pump against the mushroom seal). I'd go aftermarket rebuild... haven't gotten a bad one yet.

      How about checking the thermostat?

This is not an item to sit on. The shaft can seize, break, and send the fan through the radiator ... or worse.
