Faulty OBD - I 900 1991

I have attempted to retrieve codes due to a 'check engine' light on the dash. First time to try the OBD, followed steps outlined on this FAQ but LED does not light at all. Suggestions?
Thanks.

    Faulty OBD - I 900 1991

I had that problem the other day. It turned out to be that the LED itself was burned out. I picked up another one off a wrecked car and it got me back into business.

If you have an ohm meter to test continuity, you can pop the unit open and check out the LED, resistor, button contact, etc. Be careful if you do open it up as there are a couple tiny springs that can go flying.

      Faulty OBD - I 900 1991

I went through the test steps the other day for the first time. I was surprised that the "probe" and the sockets seems so exposed to engine grit (my cap is not a very tight fit). Perhaps you could clean the probe and sand the socket. Looks like people like that De-oxit product. I think it was the number 2 socket of the "A" test box for my 1995 940. Also, you had the key in the correct position right? Lastly that push button switch could get dirty (maybe contact cleaner on that and even jump it). I don't know the ratings of the LED but I think Radio Shack could sell you a bunch to try. Or maybe a VOM would substitute for the LED as a test. If you open it maybe you could post of picture of the innards.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't had a chance to explore it more in detail. No noticeable driveability problems.

Is it true that these tend to be emission/starting issues?
