automatic transmission 4th gear lockout mystery 200 1993

Every once in awhile, the light comes on as if I pushed the switch to lock out 4th gear. Pushing the button doesn't turn it off and the transmission stays in the first three gears. Fortunately it has always reverted back to normal after several minutes so I haven't had to enter the freeway in 3rd gear. It seems to happen mostly when I am going downhill at about 45 mph. Not sure where to start troubleshooting this intermittent problem. Perhaps bad fuse connection?

Next time it comes on, try opening up the glovebox and smacking the side closest to you. Dad used to do it to get the relay to behave until it wouldn't work anymore and he had to replace the relay.

Most likely cause is the OD relay. It can be replaced or resoldered. Info on this on the 700 FAQ's. The resolder also applies to your 240.

I have the exact same problem!

Sometimes the light comes on right away when I start the car and regardless how many times I press on the button it will not go away... until it decides to go away on its own after a few minutes maximum
I initialy thought it could have been a fuse

How can I access the procedure? I cannot find it in the 700 forum... Maybe (probably) I'm not searching it hte right way

      Thanks

      André
