Manual Tranny Acting Weird 700 1986

My 4-spd 740 GLE Wagon is extremely hard to shift, and getting worse. Sometimes it's as if there is no clutch at all, but the clutch was just replaced about 30K miles ago and adjusted about 5K ago. 1st and 2nd are especially hard to get into, and forget reverse unless the car is off when you shift into it or it grinds horribly.

Any ideas? I need to take this to a shop and I don't want to be "taken" if you know what I mean...

Thanks!
pC

If you have a hydraulic clutch, It could be that one of the cylinders is on the way out. 7 series Volvos can have either hydraulic or cable, depending on year and model. If yours is cable, Fixit has already suggested another possibility worth looking into.

Mine had the same problem and it turned out that the pin connecting the shifter to the tranny gear selector rod had almost slipped out completely. It's hard to see from the top so I think you'll need to get under the car. The allen set screw holding it in place is pretty hard to get to 'cause it's right above the big flex joint. Don't wait too long to check. If it falls out you'll be stuck in whatever gear you're in at the time. Could also be maybe a shifted tranny due to a broken mount.
