89 244 with 1-4-4 code, 1ST post will not let me reply. 200

Sorry for the double post, every reply I sent to the first post is deleted.

I searched the site and did not have any luck finding this code (I'm not the best at searching).

This 244 (number 5!) has 110,000 miles with a gas enigine and auto trans. The first problem was the Misses tried to start it several times without luck. She let it sit for 5 min, tried again and the car started and ran fine for a week.

Today she left the farm and on the second right hand corner the car died and would not start. I arrived 1 hour later and the car started , drove it home.

I tested the codes (thank goodness for Bently) and got a 1-4-4, this code is described as "Load signal missing (from LH control unit) Control unit assumes engine is at full load".

At first I was suspecting the ingition switch. Now I am not sure if other components should be checked.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The 1-4-4 code is addressed in 900 series TSB 922X dated February 1997. You have the same FI (LH2.4) and Ignition (EZ 116K) as the 700/900 cars. In a nutshell, a poor terminal connection at the Fuel relay is suggested as a possible cause.

The "load signal" from the LH ecu is sampled twice per revolution by the EZK ecu. The faulty terminal at Fuel Relay 87/1 (orange wire in your '89 240) can cause a brief and intermittent loss of all power to the LH ecu, with no noticeable effect except the loss of the load signal.

The TSB suggests that "poor soldering" on the 87/1 harness plug terminal may be at fault. You can extract the wire and it's terminal from the plug for inspection and repair. This requires you to depress a locking "tang" on the plug terminal with something like a jeweler's screwdriver as the wire is pushed in the gently pulled back (repeat as needed).

    Hi 145Guy,

Thanks for the link, mine is the LH 2.4.

I have checked the grounds and found no problems. As I am working through the Bently I am at the speed sensor test. The test is to hook an omh meter between pins #10 and #20 on the ECU, should get 250 ohms. I get zero.

I disconnected the speed sensor at the firewall and I measure 250 ohms on two of the three pins leading to the sensor.

Tomorrow I will check the speed sensor wire to the ECU and the fuel injection relay.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I assume you are talking about the crank position sensor. Don't bother with electrical tests on it. The wire almost always fails right at the sensor, and it is intermittant. If it is the original sensor or you have no idea how old it is replace it. Its a cheap part, and the car won't run without it. The original on 89s has a yellow stripe on it and they are more failure prone than the later white stripe sensors. The CPS is one of those parts I keep a spare of in the trunk.

Your symptoms sound like the CPS. The wire frays and the vibration of the engine will cause it short out intermittantly.

That's the sensor, aka RPM sensor in Bently. I will have a new sensor and fuel pump relay here monday and will post the results.

        Thanks to all.

        Happy Bricking,
