Idle Arms in Pucillo's Workshop... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S Wagon. Thanks again to all who advised me on changing the lower ball joint. It went on beautifully and you just appreciate more and more the engineering of these beasts, no?

On August 18th I will be dropping off the lower a-arms to Jeff Bosco of Precision Machine in Valhalla, NY (yes, that is a plug - the guy is great) to have the new control arm bushings pressed into place and I realize that in my bushing kit there is a bushing for the idle arm of the steering system. Am I correct in assuming that this needs to be pressed in (and the old one removed) in a manner similar to the lower control arm bushings, or is this a do-it-yourself-without-a-hydraulic-press kind of thing? How do I determine what type of idle arm I have (I, II or III) without taking the thing off first?

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

ANSWER Idle Arms in Pucillo's Workshop... 120-130 1967

    Jeff!
I have done this using an assortment of 5/8" threaded rod, nuts and an
assortment of heavy washers and pieces of tubing that will clear the holes
and bushings. If you have something to hammer against you can hammer the
bushings most of the way out and save some time. You have to do the bushings
individually because the amount of force will bend the horns of the A-frames
    together.

You can tell by looking at the idler arm if it has the rubber bushing or not.
It is quite visible. I've put them in using bolts and washers and tubes also.
    A little grease always helps.

It requires a press to r&r the idler bushing.

      Hello Lee:

Thanks, I thought so. Any way to tell whether I have a type III (rubber bushing) vs. the other types that use needle bearings, etc. without taking the whole thing apart?

      Cheers,

      Jeff Pucillo

The early type doesn't use needle bearings, just a plain bronze bush. Various ways to tell them apart, however the rubber ones don't have a grease nipple!

          Hello All:

Many thanks for the great answers. George, I am still going to have the pressing done by the pros. I will probably get to sit in on one or two and get a better feel for the force involved, etc. Then, I might feel a little more confident trying the removals myself.

          Cheers,

          Jeff Pucillo
