Swaping engines 700

I've got a 89 740 turbo with a manual trans. To save time I went to the junk yard and pulled a B230FT out of another Volvo. It had everything except the turbo. I found out that the earlier 740 have different sized main bearing than my model. I was able to determine that it was an 86 engine that I had pulled. My big qestion is; The trans in the car is a manual and the one I pulled was an auto. Are there going to be any surprises when I go to bolt the two up? basically do they share the same drive shaft?

Swaping engines 700

As long as the replacement engine is also a turbo, I think you're OK. (a non turbo engine would have way too much compression)

The difference in main bearing size has an effect on long term durability, but the engines are externally the same.

Make sure to use your original manifolds and ALL the sensors and other accessories from the 89. You will avoid a lot of problems this way. You can leave the water pump on if it seems to be OK, but you should change everything else other than the block, head, cam cover, oil pan, and the timing belt and related components.

As the replacement engine is from an automatic, you will need to remove a bushing from the end of the crankshaft, and install a pilot bearing in its place. A relatively easy task.

I believe the 89 turbos have a Hall effect distributor, in which case it doesn't matter how the flywheel is aligned. If you have a crank position sensor, the flywheel must be in time with the crankshaft, or the engine won't run.
