Success!! 140-160

My father was helping me do voltage checks on the 142S that I haven't been able to get running for months. He commented that the distributor cap sometimes cracked causing starting problems. I replied that I had already examined the relatively new cap, but handed it to him for inspection anyway. Somewhat embarrassingly for me, he quickly discovered a faint hairline crack running up the side. However, my embarrassment was most definitely outweighed by relief at finally seeing a definitive defective part. I swapped out the dizzy cap and put in new NGK plugs yesterday. The engine fired right up and ran smoother than it has in 10 years!

Many thanks are in order to all the Brickboard members who patiently helped me diagnose my no-start problem. I feel certain that inspecting, repairing, and cleaning some other parts based on your suggestions will save me headaches down the road. Also, you helped me learn how to set and tune the ignition the RIGHT way which I'm sure helps explain that smooth running engine. Now it's just a matter taking care of a few small parts and the car will be roadworthy once again.

Thanks very much!

    Good to hear....

For such issues, it really helps to have a good understanding of the ignition system... if no spark at the plugs, check for spark at the distributor end of the coil wire... you would have instantly zeroed into either cap or rotor.

None the less.. you got it, and that's great. Always nice to find the offending part, replace it, and be done.

    cheers!

That's the weird part. After some fiddling, I did have a nice bluish white spark at both the plug wires AND the ignition coil wire and still no start. Guess spark just wasn't strong enough...I'll examine parts better in the future, though. Thanks for the cheeers!

*All 4* plugs had spark? If so, I gotta think it fixed itself....

Or you father has magical powers or is somehow in tune with the car... which is not to be ruled out :-)

Yessir, all 4 wires going to the plugs had decent spark and the vehicle started running even before I swapped out the old plugs for a set of 4 new NGKs. Thus my confusion.

Maybe Dad does have extra powers...or maybe the car hates me. I used to have a friend who called things she couldn't operate or understand "possessed". Sounds like a good excuse to me! :)
