Flame trap, oil breather 900

1994, non turbo, placing hand over oil filler and there is absolutely no suction at idle or rev up. Lift my hand slightly and there appears to be pressure coming out. Does this require the flame trap/oil breather service?

That is the classic test for a blocked EGR system, so the answer is yes. Clean your flame trap and ensure that all hoses to the intake manifold and throttle body are clear as well as the nipples they attach to. This may require removing and cleaning the TB. I have a fat piece of hose that makes a pretty good seal on the top of the hose that comes up from the oil separator to the flame trap. By blowing in this hose with the oil cap off, I can tell if the oil seperator is passing air. Otherwise, you would need to remove the whole intake manifold so you can pull the speperator to check it. Of cours, if it's plugged you will have to pull it anyway.

Already cleaned TB and IAC with great results. Was suffering from eratic idle and is now solid. Going to connect a piece of hose to determine if oil separator is clogged. Just bought the car last week. 145K on it and no maintenance records. Nice shape though.
This forum is a huge help.
Thanks

from Stephen in Aust. No need to remove inlet manifold to change/replace oil separator box, at least not on right hand drive vehicles,I have done it and now do not have a "leaky" engine! and yes the flame trap and hoses also should be changed or cleaned as necessary.240GL 1990 sedan, B230f engine, A/C elec. fan, modified air box [no need for hot air supply!]poly air springs rear coils, aftermarket cruise control fitted and running!gauges, coolant level alarm.
