940 GL possible Project Car near Houston, looks interesting............. 900 1991

The car is on eBay, go to

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220169735052

to look at what I have seen.

What I know:
1. Car is located in a lot near Wharton, TX. Small town SW from Houston and home of the "Teepee Motel" (that's not made up, either).

2. The seller is the South end of a Northbound Horse. Some months back he offered a 780 for $2000 Buy-It-Now. Since the austion showed the car in Houston, I emailed him to ask him if I could look at it, and asked for his location. He answered with "Go get some other sucker to kick tires on" meaning that you must buy it in order to look at it.

3. View the auction, look at the pictures, choose one that shows both rear tail lights, enlarge it and you will see that the badging is "940 GL".

4. The abovementioned 780 was re-listed several times, with the most recent Buy-It-Now price of $700.

What I don't know:
1. Did the PO put a 940 trunk with wing on his 740? Seems more likely that the seller either doesn't know or doesn't care that the car isn't a 740.

Wharton is a small enough town that the lot is either visible from a street or known to a local person that it should be easy to find.

If you, as a Houston-area (Austin or SAT?) BB member, choose to go look, please email me and perhaps I will join you. Meet you at Baker Street Pub, Sugar Land Town Square??

If I recall correctly, Wharton is on US 59, and Sugar Land is en route and fairly convenient to the West Sam Houston Tollway and thus to me in CYpress.
But I've been wrong before. At least once. Ask me.

Regards,

Bob

The Tee Pee Motel units are actually teepees, kind of. Forget the car, I want to see the motel. http://www.texasescapes.com/Preservation/Tee-Pee-Motel-Wharton-Texas.htm

I wonder if Tee Pee's George Belcher knew Al Schafer of South Carolina’s South of the Border. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/SCDILsob.html You never sausage a place! (You're always a wiener at Pedro's!) Just a couple of the many post WW II wonders of the USA.

According to swedishbricks.net, 1991 was the last year for the 740. I see that there are plenty of posts for 1992 740s in the 700 forum.

Take a look at the few other cars he has sold. One piece of junk and some psudo classic like cars. Interesting descriptions/stories. Then a lot of muscle bike frames and parts and one burned customer. I have seen a few mistaken identities on ebay Volvos, not unusual. I’d say it is a 940 but I’d like to see the old listing. The fade on the trunk sure matches the rest of the car. Look at the fading on the LH side.

Just a guess but it looks like the photo was taken at an impound lot but probably not the sellers and the impound lot got possession of the Volvo with no payment and no owner contact. The cars are parked tight and a few cars have visible plates. If the seller had listed the VIN I could have run it through my Allstate Motor Club. Talk about a project car, yup. A money pit. New paint, tires, and what to do with the worn out beige leather seats to start.
