How does one determine which FI system is on this car? 200 1983

Hi, folks!
Before I get my hands TOO deep into the pockets buying FI parts, it seems prudent to do some checking first, and, before THAT, to find out which version of the FI system I have to deal with here....

How does one determine this? It's a 1983 244 GL non-turbo, and seems to have a few issues, but nothing life-threatening... Just trying to understand what I'm dealing with, as it's been a LONG time since I've owned a brick.... Last one was a 1975 245....

So what are the identifying marks to look for?

Thanks for your assistance!
Joe

How does one determine which FI system is on this car? 200 1983

    Welcome back.

A word of advice here. Your car (240s 1983 through 1987) is afflicted with the bio-degardable wiring harness insulation disease. That can cause a plethora of problems, so buy no FI parts until any wiring issues are resolved.

Look at the insulation on the four wires coming out of the large gray connector on the firewall, and on the two thin wires connecting to the alternator and the nearby oil pressure sensor. While it is possible that your car's wiring harness has been replaced, have a look.

I think there is an engine code in the VIN. Post it and someone will tell you.

If your car is unchanged from stock, it is the first year for the B23 engine and the "LH II" FI system. The intake manifold and "plumbing" on the right side of the engine is very different from previous engines. If I recall correctly, the 1975 (I had a 245DL) was the B20, a vertical-block pushrod engine.

Your B23F is a tilted-block single-overhead-cam engine, using the LH II control system. That engine and FI system stayed, with very few changes, in the 1984 240s.

In 1985 came the LH 2.2 and the B230F engine. The LH II became LH 2.0 (or 2.1, I forget). The B23F looks a lot like the B230F, most obvious difference being that the B23F crank drive pulley uses the split-sheave tension adjustment, the B230F does not.

The 1985+ other visual differences are in front drive and driven pulleys, and and adjustors, and the rotary a/c compressor. Your car should have the York "Cube" a/c compressor.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Thanks, Bob!
Are complete replacement under-hood wiring harnesses available for those who suffer from this ailment?

      The VIN number is:
      YV1AX8848D1912018

Another rather odd symptom, which makes me suspect electrics are not all they should be, is that the fan runs, rather slowly, but you can hear and feel it, when the fan switch is OFF. This can't be as designed, can it?

        Joe,
The fan is designed to come on whenever the AC switch is on.

There are two reasons why it may be on, first grab the AC switch and turn it hard to the left, they don't always turn off when they should.

If that does not do it the microswitch on the side of the AC switch needs to be adjusted.

If it needs to be adjusted pull the AC switch out of the dash. You will see that a lever acts on a plunger to operate the fan, with needle nose pliers bend the lever just a little, to push the plunger further in and turn off the fan.
