how to clean an O2 sensor? 700 1991

Sorry, I hit the submit button by accident before I finished entering the text. I got an functional O2 sensor from an 89 740 turbo to be used as a spare for my 91 740 turbo. However, the 89 wagon blows a lot of smoke from the engine, so the O2 sensor probe is covered by lot's of black carbon buildup. I know that alcohol is a killer for O2 sensor. What's a good, safe solvant to use to clean the probe? Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Erwin

I was not aware that alcohol or solvents would harm an O2 sensor. If this is indeed true, I would suggest using a propane torch to burn the carbon off. The sensor is resistant to high temperatures by the nature of the function it performs and where it is located, so as long as you don't get it hot enough to melt the wires, you should be OK. If you don't like this idea, perhaps scraping the worst of the deposits off of the outer protective cover (the slotted part that goes inside the manifold or cat) and installing it, and letting the heat of normal operation burn it clean would be the best thing to do.

Blue Horse, thanks for you good suggestions. Though I agree that the propane torch probabely won't damage the probe, I'll try your next suggestion. I can just use this spare probe on my car and use the good old clean one which is on my car now as future spare. I don't know exactly what Ethanol will do to the O2 sensor in my car. I do know industrial O2 sensors I use at work (bioreactors, enviromental monitoring)will be killed easily by just spraying 70% Ethanol on it. Erwin

Vrizla, thanks for your reply. Do you know if the crc eletric part cleaner has Ethanol in it? I looked at the label of my Autozone electrical cleaner and ethanol is the main ingradient. Erwin
