rear cam seal on 1991 240 HELP PLEASE 200 1991

dear fellow volvo enthusiasts,

I need help! I am working on a 1991 240dl. The rear camshaft seal is

leaking. How do I safely get the old one out and how do I correctly put the

new one in??? Do I need a special tool? There is very little space between

the back of the camshaft and the firewall. It is a four cylinder of course.

Please, please help as I have never done this before and I dont want to

break or scratch anything I'm not suposed to.

Much, much greatfulness for any help!

When the new seal is in place, you can add home-made "retainer" from metal, as shown in the picture below. The threaded holes (6.0 x 1.0mm thread) are already there in the back of the head. You will need two bolts about 3/4" (19mm) long, with 10mm hex heads yo secure the retainer.

Be sure to note the orientation of your old seal. I seem to recall the one I replaced years ago was installed flat side first, so the edges of the "cup" are out, as in the picture. This is also the way the cup-shaped core plugs in the block are installed.

    1. remove vaccum hoses & other stuff from over valve cover

    2. remove 10mm acorn nuts from valve cover. obviously, you'll need a new valve cover gasket & new cam seal

    3. with cam exposed, remove the rear cam journal cap. if you examine the cap, there's a spot to pry with a flat screwdriver. cam journal nuts are 13mm but if i remember correctly. loosen one. loosen the other. then remove both nuts.

    4. pry cam journal cap upwards. carefully of course.

    5. you'll have either a) exposed the seal or b) it will be stuck in the journal cap.

    6. clean entire area, head where valve cover gasket used to be, & cam journal cap. be very careful. take your time.

    7. cam cap back on. retorque cam cap bolts to 15 ft lbs!!!! tighten one. then other. torque after both nuts are snug.

    8. i use ultra copper silicone on the edge of the seal. simply, push it in with your fingers or a block of wood. set the new seal flush with the head -or a little more than flush- but no more. cupped side of the seal faces inward!! ask me how i know this??? i usually put a little silicone on my finger and go (by feel) around the seal at the end of the job.

    9. i use a thin bead of the ultra copper on the entire head. place valve cover gasket down over studs. then, valve cover. tighten inside to outside. do not over-torque the v.cover bolts!!! good & tight is all you need.

    10. the rest is the reverse of the above.

    11. clean or replace all the components of the pvc system for good "you love your volvo" measure. ask me how i know this??? or, why it's important to replacing the seal?

replacement acorn nuts available 200 1991

When replacing the gasket I needed some of the acorn nuts due to p.m. swapping in plain hex nuts.
Also one stud came out, with nut stuck to it.

Replacement acorn nuts were in stock in my local hardware store in the fasteners section, metric. Both stainless and regular. Looked identical to the ones in the car, minus the 18 years of rust. I'm pretty sure they also have the stud; I'm going back there today.
