Djet fun... Starts and then dies shortly after. 140-160 1972

Spark seems good, even after the car dies. Fuel pressure is good, even after the car dies.

What could it be, gurus? :)

Update... Cold start injector/valve. 140-160 1972

I have no idea why it took us so long to even consider taking a look at this, but it's stuck open. So, while running it without the intake, the car still was running rough. Took a look at the ignition timing(after replacing the timing gears, so it hadn't been set yet) and found it to be off. So, we set the timing to about 12 degrees advanced with the vacuum retard disconnected. Seems to be a bit better.

But, since I like to look at all things vintage volvo, I watched the timing as I revved up the engine... Hmm, no advance! With the vacuum retard connected, once I got to 2500rpm or so the vacuum retard would go away and the timing would advance.

If we leave the vacuum retard disconnected, the ignition timing stays at about 12-13 degrees advanced all the way up to 3000rpm and beyond.

Twisting the rotor by hand doesn't feel abnormal, but I guess there's something funky in there. It's already been taken apart and cleaned up/greased. We have another dizzy that we're taking apart right now...

Update... Round 2. 140-160 1972

Turns out the fuel pressure regulator started doing funky things. As soon as you give it gas it spins the guage all the way around. So, we swapped in a used one, along with a new cold start valve, adjusted the timing, and the thing purrs like a kitten.

Man, I love these cars. Even if they can be a hassle at times.

Djet fun... Starts and then dies shortly after. 140-160 1972

Any chance it's starting only on fuel supplied by the cold start injector and then dying as a result of nonfunctional 'regular' injectors?

If so: check the ground on the intake manifold and the trigger points in the distributor.

Hope things are good Kyle - see you Sunday?

Lack of input from the trigger points was also my first incilnation.

When it starts and "dies shortly after", how long is "shortly after" - just a few seconds?

How about connecting a fuel pressure guage - the cold start injector line provides a handy place to connect - tape the guage to the outside of the windshield so that you can observe the fuel pressure while driving and see what happens when it starts to crap out. At least it would help narrow down the possibilities and give you a better troubleshooting starting point.

I think we already tried that, but I'll confirm.

Things are good! And yeah, I guess I'll contact Dean so I can come too... :)

But no, sadly it'll run longer than that. We actually had it on for about 20 minutes, and the customer drove it down the street. Went to the store, and then when he came out and started driving away, it died as soon as he pulled into the street.

While we've had it in the shop again, it takes a bit to start up, and can die relatively soon, but other times stay on a bit longer.

I'd suggest the ol' coolant temp sensor.

Hello,

I agree, try the water temperature sensor for the fuel injection located towards the front of the cylinder head near the exhaust manifold.
