Rehostat and dash lights. 200 1989

The dash lights went out so I replaced the bulbs. Still not working. When fiddeling with the rehostat I noticed the rest of the lights around the center dash - heater controls, etc - will brighten and dim with a turn of the rehostat knob, but still no action with the dash lights.
Can anyone specify what this kind of problem this is caused by? Any fixes?

pearl:

We've had this problem with our 89, 90, and 92 244/5s. Sometimes the contacts on the bulbs do not make good contact when the bulbs are turned into place. The way I fixed it the last time was to connect all the wires up to the instrument cluster with the cluster being pulled far enough forward to get my hand in behind it. Now turn on the lights and gently twist the bulbs while watching the front of the instrument cluster, "fine tuning if you like" until the lights come on and stay on.

Hope that helps

Dash lighting control comes in through the large plug--I'm fairly certain. couple of things may have happened. You may have a fried line on the circuit board. Only way to find out is to take the entire thing apart. Removing the screws from the fusible link above the speedo and the temp and fuel gauges will allow you to take the white back away from the circuit board.

Something I've found several times now: One or more of the contacts in the plugs will come loose. As the plug is installed, the contacts are pushed out!
