Transmission Leak 1983 240 200

Hello, I am having a tranny leak, the automatic tranny fluid
seems to be dripping out of the 2 small grills on the bottom
of the transmission. If I park her on flat ground it does not
seem to drip much, but if I park on an incline (drive way)
the drip is more, maybe fist size overnight.
Any ideas why it drips more on incline and can I easly repair
the leak behind the 2 small grills on tranny.
Please help.

There is a mounting bracket that holds the two transmission cooling lines to the side of the bell housing.Vibration causes the bracket to wear through the steel wall of the lines. You may wish to remove this bracket and check out the lines before removing the entire transmission.

Something to think about if you pull the tranny yourself... 83 & 84 models have bolts and nuts to hold the starter (newer models have bolts that thread into the starter housing). You might want to unbolt the motor mounts and use a lift to manipulate the motor position. I didn't do this and broke the right motor mount causing it to slide back, down and to the left. Had to use a tow chain and a friend's truck to pull the motor back in position (in the dark) to be able to get the transmission to slide into place. Was still almost impossible to get the starter bolts back in with the bell housing so close to the firewall. Good luck.

      Hi Harold,

Are you sayin' that I should remove the starter to make more room?

Also, if I have too, can't I just loosen the motor mount bolts to
      give me wiggle room?

Did you break you motor mount or the place where it attaches to the
      firewall?

I need to find the instructions to remove and replace the tranny.
My Haynes Manual's instructions are pretty cheesy.

Thanks for any and all tips.... you guys are better than any Manual.

The source of fluid leaks can be hard to pinpoint at first glance.

It maynot be coming from the grates, thats just one of the places it gets blown to.

I've always managed to fix my tranny leaks by retorquing the pan bolts. I always find several that are loose.

Use a torque wrench and torque them to (36 to 39 in-lb). Degrease everything, I use Simple Green and hose, and see what developes.

It may be engine oil from the rear main seal? Dan

Dan, the fluid is rose colored.
I just looked in the Haynes book and
saw a picture of the "grills" on the
torque converter, but I cant find a
picture of the interior of that part.
Is there a transmission seal in there
too? I know I should lift her up on
stands and get to the bottom of this
and see where the leak is coming from.
Any idea why she leaks more while parked
      on an incline?
      Thanks,
      Joseph

This is most likely coming from the front pump seal or the input shaft seal, either way you need to have the trans removed and resealed. Have the rear main done at the same time.

I agree with B-and just had pump seal and the rear main done, as I had t-fluid coming from grates and also from the rear.
