Engine Noise in 1991 240 200

Here goes again. I am getting a sound that seems to come from the engine compartment. It does not appear while the car is sitting at idle, It has a whistling sound like a commercial jet taxing on the runway and goes away when the car comes to a stop. I don't know where to begin to check. I tapped on the catalytic converter but nothing appears to be loose in there. Thanks for any help.

I had this sound in my 960 and finally found it when i changed the timing belt,
it was the center bearing on the timing belt tensioner.
When i replaced it the sound went away, that was a relief.
You can test that theory by loosening the tension and moving the belt away and spin the pulley by hand and youy will hear the sound if that is your problem.
Mine ran that way for six months.

You can spritz some WD40 or silicone spray on the center support bearing to see if the noise goes away. Careful if the engine/exhaust system is hot because these are flamable. Do it when cold. I get the noise after rain or damp weather and have successfully used the above for the past couple of years, car runs just fine without replacing the CSB and noise goes away...

Thanks for the tip. I did as you suggested and the noise seems to have gone away. That was a big relief to be able to narrow it down to a bushing. For now I will be content with the WD-40 solution and look at replacing the bushing later on. Again, thanks. I love the Brickboard because chances are someone has experienced and/or found a solution to whatever situation that comes up involving a Brick and is more than willing to share. I wish that life in general was like that.

If it is jet airliner noise. Almost for sure it is the centre support bearing in the drive shaft. There is info here on this site about how to replace the bearing. Not a big deal to do. Mine has sounded like a airplane for years. It goes away then it comes back when it is cold..then it goes away.....

So then there is no need to worry about this causing any damage other than just the noise itself? If so, I'll just put it off for a while before I try and replace the center bearing. I looked in the Bentley Repair manual and you are right. It does not look like too bad of a job to try. Thanks.

The jet engine sound will get old... real quick.

I have successfully quieted center support bearings with spray grease (pick your favorite brand). Something that contains a vehicle that allows it to be sprayed but evaporates to leave the grease.

You need to drop the carrier down from the floorpan and remove the rubber donut exposing the bearing. It is a "sealed" bearing but of course if it was really sealed it would not be dry and rusty.

Use a dental pick or something similiar to pick up the edge of the seal and spray it generously with your lubricant. Several times.

A little Armoral on the donut makes it easier to get off and back on.

I still lean toward center support bearing,or a deer whistle.

What happens when you put the clutch in at speed? Is it speed dependent? How about just revving the motor at a light? does it make the noise then?

Sorry about that, but it is an automatic. Reving the engine does not produce the noise and the noise declines with the speed of the car. At the same time it is not always present when the car is running, but it occurs frequent enough. I wish I could narrow it down more than this.

can you roll down the windows (yea it is cold, sorry) and see if you can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from? that will help too.

Let me know!

Andrew
