Stick Shift 900 Series? 900

Has there ever been a stick shift 900 Series either from the factory or hacked?

Rich

I have been planning that mod for a while and when I get the $$ to make the conversion I will use the T56 Tremec 6 speed. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FMS%2DM%2D7003%2DH&N=700+309946+115&autoview=sku

I would love to help with this conversion and if you have a second motor a B6304TT conversion has been on my drawing board for a while.

Sounds like a fun mod for a 4 valve Volvo motor; What turbos are you planning?; megasquirt? Any idea of what a turbo would add for torque? I think a rule of thumb is 7% more HP per PSI. If you get it together, let us know how it does.

    Rich,

AFAIK 1991 was the last year for a stick 940 in the USA.
I have seen a stick '91 945T in a junkyard, now I am kicking myself for not grabbing the flywheel with the built in rpm trigger!

    Csaba
'93 945T, considering manual trans conversion, have all the parts but the flywheel...

1991 was the last year for 700 series (turbo only) with a manual transmission. The North American Market 940 never had a manual transmission.

Yup, they're pretty common here, but America was judged unworthy of such finery!

The later cars has the M90 gearbox, and there are versions which fit the redblock B230 engines as well as the whiteblock. The 960 M90 gearbox can also be used to turn the 5 cylinder 850/V70 engine into a RWD engine.

The clutch pedals are a bolt in.

Yeah... being the lazy bones we Americans are, Volvo sold like 5 740's with a stick, so they didn't bother to jump through the DOT's expensive hoops to certify the 940 with a manual tranny. Bummer.

Is the M90 geared any better than the M47 with its crazy low first gear?

Only 3% of the US North American 700 series cars had manual transmissions.

The M90 had substantially different gearing in first. See Anthony Hydes web page, http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh110/Technical_pages/gearbox_ratios_compared.htm

We have four M46/OD equipped turbo 700s in the household. Now I just need to get energetic and install the M90 I imported.

never seen a 940 with one.

Neat! Our experiences are opposite! :-)

The only stick shift 740 I've seen was on the streets of Paris, and every NA 940 I've looked at under the hood has been Regina.

From the factory, yes, on four cylinder cars, but not for sale in the USA.

Do-it-yourself is possible, with no more difficulty than doing the same conversion on a 740.

    See

    http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/VolvoAW70M46Conversion/AW71M46Conversion.htm

for a good description of what is involved.

Not sure about the sixes---either if there ever was one (again, not in US market) or if it is feasible to do a conversion. You would need a bell housing that may not exist.
